Location: Interesting converted building in Vienna, footsteps from Museum Quarter and close to Hofburg Complex. Handy parking was available for 20 euros a day and Vienna has an extensive public transit, so we parked our car for the duration.

Room: Our family of 5 stayed in a funky, high-ceilinged suite that was clearly part of the old building. Eclectic, well-appointed decor with modern conveniences, but a thoughtful retention of original details. The suite consisted of a large sitting room/office area where one rollaway bed was set up, flanked by 2 bedrooms, each with a double bed. One of the bedrooms also had an additional sitting area and there was a huge walk-in closet. All rooms were very quiet with windows closed. Impeccably clean rooms with plentiful storage, televisions and a lovely renovated modern bathroom. Bath/shower was the ever-challenging European handheld type.

Amenities: fruit bowl and 2 small bottles of water left for us upon arrival. One complaint would be that fruit and water wasn't replenished daily. Had there been 3 different parties checking in each of those 3 nights, both would have been restocked. I think for a 3 night booking of a suite, we should have been treated to this nicety. Other amenities: L'Occitane bath products, complimentary wifi, robes, slippers, safe for valuables, chocolates on the pillows. No alarm clock. Air con in both bedrooms, although one was clearly more efficient than the other for some reason. Comfortable family living room and office area. Espresso machine. Laundry service available.

Food: Included in the nightly rate was a standard continental breakfast of breads, meats, cheese, yogurt, fruits and eggs to order. Also offered a lovely afternoon tea. Staff also asked if we preferred something in addition to the cake offered.

Would absolutely stay again.

Six of us went to Vienna for a long weekend. Hotels can be very expensive in Vienna, but this one is not too bad. It is located in a tatty little side street with a very old looking and not too inviting frontage but inside its fine. It doesn't have the facilities of large Hotels like gardens, pool etc, but then you are not paying their prices either.

Some of the paintwork is looking a little tatty but the rooms themselves are fine. Good selection of cold foods at Breakfast and cooked eggs if wanted.

Our room was very hot with the air con not up to much.

The Hotel is within walking distance of some of the interesting sites. Vienna is really interesting with lots to see. Its a shame that many areas have been defaced by graffiti which is everywhere, and no one seems to be bothered to clean it off.

Room Tip: Take loads of money you will need it

Very nice boutique hotel, in heart of the art district Spittelberg, quite close (a short walk of several blocks) to Innere Stadt sites, Ringstraße, and major historic and cultural sites - incl Hofburg and Schönbrunn, Museum Quarter, Spanish Riding School, and Stephansplatz / Stephansdom.

In an older, historic building and district, Alstadt is quite charming - a 42 room property that, over its four floors of public areas and rooms, definitely evokes that quirky posh boutique feel, each room and floor having its own art and decor, style. Room was very comfortable, hardwood floors, high ceilings, and updated bath with glass walls. Def older building, so do not expect typical chain; but, very nice.

Very friendly and professional front desk team; and, similarly very nice wait staff in dining areas. Includes breakfast buffet and afternoon tea & cake. Very reasonably priced.

Had AC breakage in midst of 35-degree C / 95-degree F + heat wave, and had to move second night (was business trip) - but, other hotels suffered similarly in unusual extreme weather, so no harm, and, irrespective, would certainly stay here again and recommend it readily. Lovely little hotel with great staff and good rate.

Vienna is expensive, so finding a good hotel that does not cost a fortune is a challenge. Hotel Alstadt is not cheap, but good value for central Vienna. It is quite a short walk to the main sites of old Vienna and to the subway if wanting to visit places like Schloss Schonbrunn (you can buy a day ticket for public transport at reception). The hotel itself is somewhat historic (as is the area in which it is situated). There are many good restaurants and cafés nearby. We did have an issue with the air conditioning constantly switching itself off and the night-time staff (male) was very unhelpful - a contrast to the lovely helpful female staff on duty during our 2 day stay. The rooms we had were spacious and comfortable. The breakfast choice was excellent, and an afternoon tea is included if you happen to be at the hotel when it is served.

We selected the Hotel Alstadt based on positive reviews on Trip Advisor and were certainly not disappointed. The hotel is conveniently located, just a short walk from the underground and tram networks. As other reviews point out, the hotel reception is on the first floor which is fairly unusual.

The building is clearly old and has a lot of character, with some very quirky artwork on display - some of which is quite racy! Our room was a good size, well equipped, comfortable and clean. The air conditioning was welcome during a period of very hot weather. The breakfasts were very good. We also took advantage of the free tea and homemade cake available daily from 4pm to 6pm.

Our greatest praise however must be reserved for the excellent staff at the hotel who, without exception, made us feel really welcome and were at all times friendly and efficient. A very well run hotel which fully deserves a five star rating.

This is not your standard generic luxury hotel with faceless staff and banal decor - hotel altstadt is a small boutique hotel with unusual art work and personable staff. I really enjoyed the stay here and the breakfast is a complete delight. We stayed in July and the weather was close to 40 degrees so our air conditioned room was very welcoming. Each of the rooms appear to have been influenced by different designers and the art work on your walk to and from reception is wonderful.

The hotel is based in the museum district and it was lovely to see the museums during the day and come back at 4pm for a slice of cake and a pot of tea (coffee was extra if wanted during the afternoon). We had a problem with our shower overflowing which was fixed within hours of us raising the issue. We even got a hug on our departure - you wouldn't get that at a Hilton! Lovely relaxing and different - would definitely go back and next time try out one of the suites. When we arrived to Vienna we took a taxi to the hotel but on the way back took the railway which was really easy. Unless time is pressing, there is no need to take the CAT train service from or to the airport as the regular service is far cheaper (though stops more frequently than the CAT service).

Travellers need to know this hotel is in a very old, vertical building, which can be both charming and uncomfortable, and therefore not for everyone. I stayed in Robert's Place on an upper floor for 4 nights in July and it was extremely hot. There is one small AC unit in the bedroom but nowhere else in the suite. The AC somehow warmed up in the night (set it at 18 or 19, woke up with it reading 24). The suite is at the end of the hall and faces in on other buildings, so it's quiet, and clean, but the view isn't attractive and the room layout and décor are a bit odd (very racy piece of art over the sofa). Separate rooms for toilet, bedroom, bathroom, and sitting room. Dark. Cheap furnishings for a 4-star. The elevators are slow and smell bad so I opted for the many flights of stone stairs between my room and reception. This hotel would not be a good choice for people with mobility issues (reception and restaurant salon are on the first floor up, not ground floor). No staff at street level to help with baggage. The whole layout of the hotel is strange, with guest rooms next to private apartments, and keys are required to get to different parts of the hotel. I tried to think of it as my own apartment in Vienna a century ago. Spittelberg, the surrounding neighborhood, is very cool and worth a visit. The staff were friendly and eager to help but appeared hurried (helping many guests) and were not familiar with many restaurants rated highly online or by guidebooks; they recommended touristy eateries and concerts instead. Breakfast was the highlight of my stay, as others have noted. I don't get what all the rave reviews are about.
