What a lovely surprise this hotel was for us. The decor is fascinating and the rooms are beautiful. And a heated floor in the bathroom, what a nice touch. Wonderful breakfast in a lovely breakfast area. The staff are so helpful and attentive. Wi-fi is free.

It is well situated for the Museum area and access to the Ring and the historic area.

We stayed for 2 days and had no problems whatsoever. Highly recommended.

The approach to the hotel along a gritty, busy road out of Vienna centre does not suggest what is about to greet you. Even through the front door, first impressions don't impress - Reception is actually up one flight of stairs. But from that point on everything in this sprawling Hotel is impressive. Reception is a small office but staff are very friendly and can't do enough to help you - the staff to guest ratio at times seems like one to one so attentive were they. We expected the standard room booked on the web but gratefully accepted a complimentary upgrade to a junior suite that was a delight. Spacious, quiet and air conditioned with a freestanding roll top bath - in the bedroom !! - this was a quality room with comfortable beds. Breakfast which is included in the room price is served in the lounge and a few linked rooms. Choice is plentiful and fresh, with eggs cooked to order. Don't miss the afternoon tea and cake served from 4pm - again, included in the price of a room. The curious choice of artworks adds to the atmosphere of what must be one of the best all round tourist hotels in the city.

Room Tip: Room 15 is a junior suite overlooking the top, main road which despite the traffic made noisy intrus...

Most hotels offer basic comforts or luxury comforts without attention to the needs and wishes of lclients. Chain hotels especially. The staff at the Altstadt, however, take an exceptional approach to looking after wishes of the guests as top priority. My jr suite was large, quiet, and very well furnished. Breakfast is probably the most filling and relaxing in Vienna. Eggs can be prepped according to one's wishes. All served in a cozy salon. And when I wanted delivered food, that was no problem. This was my second stay, and I shall return. My thanks to the entire crew, reception, breakfast room, and room cleaning staff, who were all attentive and cheerful.

Tips: for groceries, there is a Spar store on Burggasse just east of the hotel, as well as a Billa store on Neubeugasse just south of Burggasse and west of hotel. Bottled water, fresh fruits, milk, juices, and much more are available there.

Overall, this is a rare hotel for a peaceful, highend stay without the high prices common at top impersonal hotels on the Ringstrasse. If only more hotels and their staff can be like the Altstadt.

Room Tip: Get a jr suite at back of hotel, facing Burggasse. Quiet!

We booked this hotel on spec through BA; we chose it principally because it was one of the very few BA recommended hotels that included breakfast in the price (and afternoon tea and cake!) From the start we were made to feel that we were staying with friends, Altstadt is the very opposite of the impersonal city hotel, everyone was most warmly welcoming and attentive. The breakfast was super: continental and buffet in style but such a wide choice and so much of it. Our room was spacious, the bed wide and so comfortable and the bath room well equipped with sundry goodies on the shelf.
The location, in the Spittelgurg area, was very convenient for restaurants and for the UBahn Volkstheater station from whence we explored the beautiful city.
The excellent service continued right up to the point of departure when the young lady from reception helped us down to the front door with our luggage.
Above all, this is a hotel with great character.

We travelled with a group of 22 persons (11 rooms). There slipped a problem in the communication and, for the point of view of the hotel, we arrived a day to early. However the hotel managed this perfectly : we received immediatly 8 of the 11 booked rooms and, for one night, 3 rooms were quickly found in another nice, nearby hotel. The hotel took care of everything (also the extra costs) ! Perfect management and this for a young staff. Good work.
Furthermore our stay at hotel Altstadt Vienna was great : very spacious, quite and clean rooms, good breakfast and very kind service.
With no doubt : if we come back to Vienna we will most certainly stay in Altstadt Vienna.
Many thanks.

Let me begin by saying that if you are looking for the anonymity of a chain hotel that could be in any city - this is not the place for you. If,like ourselves, you like to feel part of the city in which you are staying, then look no further. This old patricians house, close to the Museum Quarter, has been adapted into a friendly, if somewhat quirky, hotel. Catering for more than 80 guests, it is only at breakfast that you are likely to meet many of these residents. For most of the time one is left feeling that this is very much your own residence in the city, with personal staff ready to serve you. Before we even arrived at the hotel, we had experienced the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff in response to a number of queries by e-mail. While our room (14) had no view to speak of, it was at the back of the hotel and was absolutely quiet. The owner clearly has a mission to support young artists and much of their large work is on display throughout the hotel and in the bedrooms. While it may not be to everyone's taste it is certainly better than the anodyne 'art' to be found in most hotel rooms. Between 4.00pm and 6.00pm each evening the hotel offers free tea and cake to residents and for those of us, not quite so young as we used to be, this was a much appreciated period of rest between the day's activities and going out for a meal in the evening. Most, if not quite all, of the staff make you feel extremely welcome. Special mention must be made of one particular breakfast waitress who had such a wonderful smile and warm personality, that it would have provided a great start to the day - even if the buffet breakfast has not been of the high standard that it was. We stayed for four nights and were very sorry to leave.

We arrived at the Hotel Altstadt by cab and took the elevator up to the Reception area on the second floor. The hotel is in the Spittleburg area, maybe a half mile or so from the Kunsthistorisches Museum and Hofburg complex. With the email help of the staff, I had selected Room 33, a bright and spacious room with a view of the church across the way.

The hotel is in a beautiful 1902 building with high ceilings and moldings. Our room was on the fourth US floor. As you entered the room through a double set of doors (one locking exterior, one interior, so very little sound transmission), there was a bathroom with a tub/shower on the left, a large armoire on the right, a desk and sofa, and a king size bed with night tables. The lighting at the bedside was good for reading, but I do need to say that I would have appreciated a little more ambient lighting in the room - there was one up-light, but the others had metal shades that were more for tasks than overall lighting. Whatever, we were fine with it!

There were at least four spaces on the reception floor for lounging or eating: one with a fireplace, sofas, and lounging chairs, and three others with tables and banquettes or chairs. We went down on the first evening for cakes and coffee, and met a lovely couple from England. Breakfast, included in the room rate, was great! A selection of meats, cheeses, breads, juices, cereals, cooked eggs, fruit, coffee, tea...exceptional. One day we were too tired to venture out for dinner and opted to have a light meal in the lounge. It was great! Lucas the bartender served us lentil soup, a fabulous zucchini soup, a Caprese bagel sandwich, and toasted bread with Brie and mango chutney. And wine, of course! It was like being in someone's home and relaxing, with the breeze coming in the window and the candles lit. We liked dinner so much we enjoyed it again on our last night, with our new friends from England.

Lots of hotels have nice staff, but I thought that the Altstadt's staff went above and beyond. Cosima helped with our room, Michelle with info about tickets on the Bradner line for our short Danube cruise, and all of the breakfast staff were SO nice. In addition, when there was a mix-up on their end and we were charged Euros instead of Dollars on check-out, the hotel manager, Alexandra, responded quickly and graciously, crediting our account for the difference.

That to me is the sign of a great hotel, and I would recommend it without reservation!

Room Tip: The rooms looking out to the street are very nice. If getting one facing the courtyard/back, get a h...
