The Alstadt is not your run of the mill boutique hotel. It's part of a residential building; there is a common entrance and lifts are shared by both guests and the non insignificant number of residents. A sign directs one to the first floor reception. The receptionist was lovely and very helpful but unfortunately she seemed to be the only person manning the hotel for most of the day so there is no help with luggage.
Rooms are inter spread on the different floors and our beautiful suite was in a locked corridor- probably an apartment once upon a time. I only glanced one other room in our corridor but it seems all the rooms are individual, and beautifully decorated and appointed. Our junior suite was very spacious and was made up of 2 rooms and a dressing room. There is a lot of modern art about, giving the hotel space a very eclectic look. It seems to be frequented mostly by couples and as a result has a rather quiet, whispering ambiance.
There is no restaurant as such but the breakfast is phenomenal and they serve complimentary tea and cake in the afternoon, which was very enjoyable especially as the weather during our visit to Vienna was very, very cold. The hotel is not central, but not far: central Vienna is not very large and one can walk into the centre within 15-20 minutes from the hotel.
We did enjoy our stay but I honestly don't think that I would return there. I missed a little some of the hustle and bustle of a "normal" luxury city hotel and I certainly missed the service that one receives in such establishments. Whilst rather beautiful, the Alstadt rather felt as "style over substance".

Sadly we only stayed 2 nights. I had contacted the hotel twice before my arrival, they responded immediately and were incredibly helpful.
The hotel itself was within easy walking distance of bars, restaurants and the cultural and shopping centre. Highly recommended.

I would recommend this hotel. Very friendly and helpful staff. Spotlessly clean, quiet and comfortable room. Good location fairly near the Ringstrasse. Nice lounge with an open fire and a small selection of light meals available in the evening with small but high quality choice of wines - also generous size by the glass so good value. Very good breakfast also, price included in the room.

The hotel is spotlessly clean for starters. Every member of staff is extremely friendly and helpful. We really loved it, a great breakfast and great to come back to for afternoon tea and cake. We could not recommend the hotel and the staff highly enough. Really enjoyed our stay.

Lots of good things have been said already about this hotel. We stayed 4 nights and were very comfortable in our room which above all was splendidly quiet. Most of all, the staff make you feel very welcome and they seem happy and always ready to help: reflecting the owner's philosophy which is that happy staff will provide excellent service. There is a good breakfast selection (continental and buffet) and complimentary afternoon teas, with cake of course, which guests gather together each day in the comfortable lounge to enjoy.
The hotel is nicely located within about a 10 minute walk of the nearest U-Bahn station “Volkstheater” which itself is just 2 stops away (less than 5 minutes) from the centre “Stephansplatz”. The hotel entrance (as others have said) is unassuming and in a not particularly attractive side-street but it has little passing traffic as a result and is therefore quiet.
The hotel may disappoint those looking for a plush 4-star exterior and lobby with all the trimmings to match. Vienna has a good number of excellent hotels to choose from and many will also fall in to that category. We were very happy with our choice most particularly because of the friendly staff.

We had a lovely stay at the Altstadt. Had a great room overlooking the church. Very jolly girl on reception showed us our room and gave us some restaurant tips. We arrived in time for tea in the salon which was a real treat. Classical music playing and a fire in the grate - couldn't be more relaxing. Our room was huge with high ceilings, and considering it was snowing and freezing outside, warm (very efficient double glazing). Bathroom tiny but perfectly formed with Occitaine products. All very clean. Breakfast was a fantastic selection - and we were pleased that there were several rooms set up so no wait. We wished we'd been able to stay longer.

We stayed at the Hotel Altstadt for two nights on our honeymoon (Jan 2012). We had to stop over in Vienna to fly through to the Maldives.

After seeing photographs of the Matteo Thun Design rooms we wanted to make sure we stayed in the same room. Unable to book the room online we called the hotel and made the booking direct.

The room did not disappoint. It looked fantastic. One of the coolest rooms we have ever stayed in. It looked just like the professional photographs on their website. Using the hotels free wifi we posted a photo of the room on facebook and lots of friends wanted to know where we were staying and commented on how cool the room was.

The staff were all very friendly and assisted us in directions to the Museum of Modern Art and I'm pretty sure we got tickets to the tourist buses from them.

The breakfast each morning was very good. They had a small selection of bread, juice, fruit, yoghurt and cheese. A waiter would come take a hot breakfast order. So if you are someone that loves a buffet you may want to go to a larger hotel.

Each afternoon they would serve free cake and coffee for a couple of hours which was nice.

The hotel is tucked away on a small side street and then about 5 to 10 minutes walk down a main road which takes you to the main tourist area. We stayed in early Jan 2011 so walking around in the cold wasn't an issue.

Great value hotel and would definitely recommend it, especially the Matteo Thun rooms.
