“Exquisite vegetarian delights”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

As a card carrying carnivore, I was a little wary of this meal, but it more than exceeded the hype from my wife (who had visited 18 months before) and my own expectations. We each had a four course tasting menu, mine a little more 'earthy' than hers, but every course was spectacular in a different way. The flavours are superb, the attention to detail impressive and the theatre of the meal completes the experience.

The service is impeccable, friendly and warm, not pretentious at all (as some might expect from a restaurant serving this type of tasting menu). Our meal including champagne and lots of bottled water was ~£70 per head, which for 4 courses and several intermediate tasting plates seems very good value when the quality is this high.

I especially enjoyed the Zucchini flowers with chanterelle mushrooms; the chilled leek and potato soup and the peach sorbet palette cleansing course. The candied peel and chocolate/passion fruit truffles at the end of the meal were also excellent.

I'd heartily recommend this to anyone; and if you are the usual meat eater who would rather die than step into a veggie restaurant, give this try - it will broaden your horizons!

“Wonderful, wonderful place”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

Having raved about Tian since my last visit in Feb 2012, I was a little nervous about taking my meat-loving husband in case he was disappointed. I needn't have worried - it was even better than last time. We both had a four course menu and the food was amazing. Imaginative, clever, whimsical, interesting, thoughtful, beautiful food, plate after plate after plate. Everything was tasty and fabulous, from the amuse-bouche of carrot, apple and grapefruit juice to the little bag of petit fours (candied orange peel - wow!) that ended the meal. Service is impeccable and friendly and the restaurant is beautiful. Our bill came to €143 which included two glasses of champagne and wine, i honestly believe it was wirth every penny. I heartily recommend this place to anyone, vegetarian or not, and will be back every time I visit Vienna. It's probably my favourite restaurant ever.

“Art on a plate - but good substance as well as form”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

In Vienna, one of the world's most carnivorous cities, where schnitzel and tafelspitz are worshipped with almost religious zeal, it was inevitable that The Wife and I would seek out a vegetarian restaurant. And, a very good one it was too! We both ordered a four-course tasting menu, but I counted five amuse-bouches before The Wife's first course arrived. So... some sort of fruit & veg smoothie (nice); two petri dishes (one filled by oysterleaf cress mixed with yoghurt; the other contained a delicious cucumber & passion fruit jelly, but was topped with a rather tasteless puree); three types of home-made bread with creamy Alpine butter and nutty olive oil; the 'Tian Taste', which was a small, water-filled bowl with tiny floating watercress leaves (the idea is to skim off the leaves and eat them from a sliver of artisan bread spread with cream cheese, I think - it didn't quite work!). As The Wife had ordered (what was advertised as) Yellow Beans with Goat's Cheese and Chanterelles, she was offered a pre-taste of something or other before receiving instruction about how to eat her first course - or rather, when to sip to rare, aged Pedro Ximenez vinegar that would bring the flavours of the beans (set in a chanterelle-flavoured aspic), the goat's cheese sorbet and the scattered pan-fried chanterelles together. Subsequently, The Wife described this course as 'the dish of the day'; it was a sexy triumph of invention by a very savvy and well-educated palate - if only all the ideas had worked so well. My potato, leek and winter truffle soup was delicious, but it didn't prevent food envy from raging. We both enjoyed the stuffed courgette flowers that arrived next. We became a little distracted by the theatre of coffee percolating over mushrooms at a nearby table, but held it together for the 'main course' of artichoke tortellini with mushrooms and broad beans. Again, another triumph! Our choices for final course (well... the one before the fudgy petits fours) were, again, different - I had the Cantal cheese with sprouting broccoli tops pickled in vinegar brewed from Beerenauslese wine. The Wife took iced coffee (with more PX sherry). Surely, one of the best vegetarian meals we've eaten in a restaurant, but so it should be for the price - with a cracking bottle of old(ish) Grüner Veltliner, the total bill was €170 before service.

“So good! Couldn't believe it was vegetarian!”
Reviewed August 19, 2013 via mobile

Such a cute little restaurant and the staff is so nice. They would bring out small starters complimentary of the kitchen which were amazing. Everything we had there was good. I highly recommend the risotto. They can accommodate you if your vegan as well. We left with our stomachs FULL and happy!

“Vegetarian at its best, words can't describe it. Sensational!!”
Reviewed August 18, 2013 via mobile

It was a warm August night. We made a short- notice reservation and still got a table outside. The staff is very friendly. The choice is limited to two menus all offering upto 6 courses. The great thing is that one can combine courses from the different menus. You also can order a la carte. Each course was an out-of-this-world experience. And all are introduced with a greeting from the chef. The food was not only good, but so well presented... There is no way to describe the experience with mere words. The place is for gourmets and any looking for a cosy dinner. Not really for kids.
It was not cheap, but worth every single euro! Wow!
