While visiting Vienna's center, we walked several times through the square.
It has a very nice scale and great life.

This is a nice European Square. It is especially lovely at Christmas with all of the lights. The windows and stores all decorated makes it worth the trip. Great shops and coffee houses to take a break.

It's always full of people, full of life and action in the street, lots to shops, souvenir shops, bars... You can get a horse ride for 50€, apx. 30min... over all lovely square, but nothing you can't see in other big city in europe...

This should be the focal point of your Vienna exploitations! Lovely square - just avoid the touts who are handily dressed up in historic costumes making them easy to spot! Do your research on here before engaging with them - from what I heard the standard tactic appears to be that if you sign on the dotted line they will be able to pull a few strings and get you an upgrade at the standard price. Do your research and make your choice ...

Plenty of shops - nothing spectacularly different from other big cities but nice atmosphere. Felt reasonably safe at night but keep your wits about you.

You can rent a horse and carriage here - this is the main stopping-off point but there are other locations to pick them up. I believe that it was €80 for a 50min tour - though there was a cheaper and shorter one.

Tip - download the TA mobile app dedicated to Vienna for your smartphone. It can work off-line and Vienna is quite easy to lose your bearings in. GPS combined with the directions proved invaluable. 5 out of 5 to TA on this one!

Nice for a trip if you have not been. Great for photographers. Got frustrated outside the cathedral with ticket touts - they like to harass you, and harass you, and harass you...
That said it's worth a visit and easy to get to on the public transport circuit.

If you are looking for the old manner shop to buy some goodies you'll find it here, but it's now very commercial and not cheap.

Enjoyed the horse and carriages.
