I definitely recommend taking the ring tram around this area first. Take a good look of the area, the buildings, the streets, and make a list of which ones you like the most. Then definitely take a tour on foot around this area, taking into account what you've listed, spend more time in those places. It is a very lovely area to walk, especially in good weather, the streets are almost empty in some regions and if you want to walk peacefully without being interrupted by hordes of tourists. The architecture is lovely and it lifts your heart up just to look around, enjoy the tall trees and the streets. Definitely the best feature of Vienna.

If you are rich and want to waste money - go ahead.
If you would like to browse non standard & no tourist crap made in china: go to the famous & gorgeous flea market, every Saturday from 7AM ! The earlier - the less crowded (address naschmarkt, underground no.4)

The mall inside the between Kärtner strasse and Schwartzenberg gasse, just inside the Kärtner Ring trasse is worth visiting. Many shops and useful services. The food market in the bottom of block II (closest to Schwartzenberg gasse) has a very nice delicatessen with everything you can think of. I wish my hometown had something like it.

Take the tram tour around the entire ring and see many of the most architectural beautiful buildings in the city. You can go around by taking Tram 1 and Transferring to Tram 2 for the 2 Euro fare. Or take the special 30 minute tour tram which I think costs 6 Eurosand no need to transfer.
