“Great place to spend the day”
Reviewed November 18, 2013

Very interesting part of town. What we saw was free but I don't know if everything in there is free. Just fun to walk around and see all the different presentations in such beautiful buildings

What a fantastic building ! However apart from some stunning works (Bacon, De Andrea, Hockney,...) the museum lacks consistency/coherence. It is not because you have a couple of great names, some Austrian hero's and a fantastic building you are recognised as the temple of contemporary art. Esp the exhibition on 'and materials and money and crisis' is a bummer.
Room (lit) for improvement...

“between history and modernity”
Reviewed November 12, 2013

A cultural core with something interesting for everyone and a very pleasant place for a coffee break. Very fresh and young atmosphere, between history and modernity.
Leopold Museum hosts works of Klimt, Kokoschka and Schiele (world's largest collection of Egon Schiele's work).

“Grand architecture”
Reviewed November 12, 2013

The buildings are very grand and are a great background setting to the imperial palace which is over the road.

The old buildings are not very user-friendly for disabled people, but wheelchair users can get access via the service lifts. That's a gripe. But the museums do contain some amazing stuff.

I particularly enjoyed the exhibition of plasticised dead people in the natural history museum. This was quite fascinating and very instructive. How they dissected the cadavers to show the nervous system, for example, was highly instructive.

While we also visited the Leopold Museum, I wanted to give a shout out for the MUMOK. We enjoyed the special exhibition that was up during our visit, but we particularly appreciated the permanent collection. It's a stunning survey of modern and contemporary art. The Jean Tinguely construction is actually activated at the top of every hour. I don't know of another museum that offers such a treat. The art is displayed well and there is abundant English wall text.
