“Who needs a horror story when you have the Steinhof Grounds and church?”
Review of Kirche am Steinhof

The church itself is indeed a splendid example of Art Nouveau architecture at its best.
Right beneath it,you will find several beautiful Pavillions where Euthenasia was widely practiced

For those who'd like to know:during the Nazi regime in Austria, this is the place where people were murdered en masse.

Those who were supposedly "mentally handicapped" [not forgetting homosexuals]were sent to these pavillions where they were injected with a lethal poison. They died slow, painful deaths.Among them were thousands of children-notably Jewish ones, and this is an undisputable fact. The doctors that enabled this crime still kept their jobs for many years to come.Several yards beneath the church, there's a garden commemorating the murdered children. There's an exhibit consisting of pillars of light, each light denoting a murdered child.

You think this is the worst? WAIT!

In the Sixties, way after WW II, an interesting room was discovered in one of the pavillions.
It was filled to the brim with FRESH BRAINS OF CHILDREN preserved in formaldehyde jars.
The ensuing scandal was quickly brushed under the carpet with the professor in charge claiming this had "Research value".

So yes,the church is beautiful and it must be kept in mind that it was built before these atrocities took place.

So instead of going to a horror movie-treat yourself to a reality horrific experience in the Steinhof grounds.
I personally could not sleep for several nights after visiting the place and finding out about its history only later.

From outside it´s a great Sight already, but once you get inside ... it just takes your Breath away!

Jugendstil at it´s finest, very puristic and straight!

A true Work of Art!

A MUST Visit in Vienna! Take Care: it is not open always, check per Internet in advance!

A visit can be highly recommended. Built in the area of a psychiatric hospital, taking into account the needs of the patients and also for multiple confessions within the "Steinhof-Gründe" a public park with spectecular view of Vienna.

This church represents the Vienna Jugendstil like no other one. Build by Otto Wagner, It was fantastically restaurated with its gold cupola (400 kilos of Gold was needed!) You should take the time to visit it inside it is worth it.

Otto Wagner’s masterpiece of Jugendstil (Secessionist) design, which has been recently restored, is situated in the grounds of the Steinhof Psychiatric Hospital and is an outstanding place to visit. But note, it is only open on a Saturday afternoon or by appointment, and is hard to get to, but well worth the trip, if you are interested in Jugendstil. The stained glass windows are by Kolo Moser. It is an awe inspiring and deeply spiritual place, no matter what your religion, with certain design features done especially for the patients. The detail is amazing
