“Arrive too late to get in :(”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Warning: It's out of the way-can get ther with the Ubahn and bus, but then there is a bit of an uphill hike through the hospital grounds. We got there right at sunset. The building was beautiful, but it had already closed (we got there about 5 pm or 6 pm), so not sure how the interior was unfortunately.

“A pilgrimage”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

I must admit that I am very useless with public transportation, so I took a taxi to Kirche am Steinhof. Also, I was pressed for time. This church is located in a hospital ground, which is not made clear in many guides. The best and most suitable approach to take is to ascend the steep path from the lower entrance of the hospital. One has to exert oneself before one is rewarded by the astonishing sight of the giant statues of the two prophets glaring at the world on top of the church. Tours are organized by the hour so don't expect to arrive and have access immediately. If one knows architecture, one would agree that there is nothing similar in the world - Otto Wagner, underrated but so important to fin-de-siecle Vienna, is a genius. The visit might take a whole morning or afternoon. Not to be squeezed in between other plans. Take your time. Winter visit not as nice as autumn or spring visits.

“worth the trip from center city”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

This must be the most impressive art deco church in the world. Photos do not do it justice. The ride on public transport takes a while and leaves one about 3-4 blocks downhill from the Kirche, but the trip and walk are well worth it. Check hours before heading out as this church has more limited opening hours than many.

“Otto Wagner or Steinhof Church Wien”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

This is THE most important building and church of the Art Nouveau era, and especially the Jugendstil of Austria. As already mentioned, easy to get to on the 48a, either from Karl Renner Ring, or the end of the U3 line to Ottakring, and catch the regular bus there! Jaw dropping bronze Angel statues over the door, compleltely clad in white marble with copper studs, and a large copper dome. Gilded light fittings and interior decor, as well as the high altar and the pulpit all made to the same style. Accoustics are amazing too. " Euros charged for a visit on a Sunday, but worth every cent. Views from the mount of Vienna are also beautiful.

“A gem”
Reviewed August 8, 2012

This is so beautiful, and a real antidote to baroque churches. The clean lines of the Secession Building are here given an equally worthy inside, white and gold and gleaming. The four evangelists live in symbol in the skylights, and the patron saints of psychiatric medicine line up to honour the Christ over the altar, who for once looks old with it all - it works.

Look carefully at the angels over the porch, and wonder at the critic who said - but their wings don't look like *real* angels' wings. Well. They could equally well be looking at the perfectly square gold wings either side the tabernacle, which work just as well.

I still can't find who the saints are - the documentation on the web and at the church are very sparse.

Practicalities. This is the chapel of a real psychiatric hospital. This did not cause us any problems, but do be aware. The entry is free 4-5 Saturday afternoon and cheap 12-4 (I think) Sunday afternoon. Guided tours beforehand cost a bit more. The 48A bus from Dr Karl-Renner-Ring goes all the way - the stop seems to have 2 names "psychiatrisches zentrum" and "otto wagner spital" but is anyway the last before the end of the line. Stops right outside.
