Owner description: The baroque world in the State Hall What comes to mind when you think of a library hall? Enter the State Hall of the Austrian National Library and your expectations are guaranteed to be exceeded. Feel the essence of history. The State Hall – built in the 18th century as part of the former Court Library – is a breathtaking 80 metres long and 20 metres high. An intricately decorated dome and numerous frescos provide an imperial flair. This baroque jewel is home to over 200,000 tomes. Four magnificent Venetian globes, each with a diameter of over one metre, provide the finishing touch to the heart of the Austrian National Library.

“A must to see”

The entrance of this museum is rather difficult to get to. But I recommend this museum highly. Another glimpse of the wealth during the Hapsburg's reign.

“Amazing library hall!”
Reviewed February 27, 2014

I absolutely loved the central library hall! Towering book cases, thousands of old books, stunning frescos and old globes, marble floors, secret rooms! Loved it. Well worth the €7 entry fee. For an extra €4 you can purchase a ticket to see other permanent and temporary exhibitions such as the Globe Museum, Papyrus Museum and Esperanto exhibition. Quirky and offbeat options that are definitely worth a look!

“Cool Exhibitions”
Reviewed February 20, 2014

The Prunksaal is part of the main Hofburg complex, and can be overlooked as a visitor venue, as it stands back from the square between the Spanish Riding School and the AugustinerKirche.
This grand library hall is a fine baroque library room, and there is usually an exhibition in place open to the public for a fee (usually about 4 E). I have caught some interesting displays here over the years, but check online first to see what is currently showing.
Allow normally about 20 to 30 minutes if the exhibit appeals to you, if you are going just to see the room, it is only 5 minutes walk around though. The mix of room and what is in the display cases, makes it work.
Tip 1. Check ahead see what is on.
Tip 2. Keep your coats on in low season, no heating in the hall.
Tip 3. Modern toilet facilities !
Tip 4. Continue out to AugustinerKirche and Albertina Museum on one side, or to Hofburg Residence Rooms and Spanish Riding School on the other.
Finally : there are some good coffee shops within a couple of minutes of the hall.
