My wife and I just did the Sound of Music tour today. We had Robert as our tour guide and driver. The total tour group consisted of 8 people in a large minivan. Contrary to what another reviewer said, the front seats were very comfortable and offered great views. As a tour guide, Robert was fantastic ( he was a superb driver as well!). He was very knowledeable about the sights and history of the area. In addition to the drive and stopover in the lakes region, the walking tour of Salzburg was the highlight. We the had over 2 hours on our own to explore the city. My only complaint was the very long drive back to Vienna, which of course couldn't be helped.

The hotel we stayed in recommended Royal Tours. After reading the reviews, we were not sure if we should commit.
I am glad we did. We were lucky to get Robert as the guide, and I guess this made a difference.

The tour takes you over to Salzburg trough the Salzkammergut area of Austria, painted with breathtaking views of mountain and colourful, clean and pure lakes.
On the way any and all of the major tourist attractions were pointed out and most important details about them provided. The tour stops at Wolfgang Lake, allowing for few deep breaths of almost-alpine air.

In Salzburg, the walk through town (about 1.5 – 2 h) was also very informative. It touched the history, current attractions, Mozart’s birth home, and other facts (Sound of Music). After the guided tour, about 2 hours are given to explore the city on your own. It was sufficient time for us (including lunch in Stieglkeller, with a beautiful view of the city). No one should expect a miracle of time-stretch to see it all in one day trip from Vienna. The expectations have to be realistic, and based on that I would recommend the tour with great confidence. It gave us enough instead and taste of Salzburger part of Austria to want to return for more and explore it for more than a few hours.

The “mechanics” of the tour were fine:
1. we were picked up from our hotel in Vienna center about 30 min. later than initially told (7:30 instead of 7:00). The hotel was called to advise us about the delay about 15 min. into our wait. Not big deal – we waited outside.
2. we were driven by some other than Robert to a meeting place near Naschmarkt, where we boarded the actual transportation van. By the time we arrived, there were no more seats left to allow us to sit together. After inquiring with Robert, arrangements were made for our trip back to Vienna to sit together.
3. We were dropped off at the hotel around the time we were expected to return (8:30 pm).
4. transportation is in a mini-van accommodating 8 people (two in front, three in the middle and last seat rows) & the driver-guide.
5. the van was comfortable, clean, well maintained, A/C worked well (important, as it was a very hot day) and the speaker system worked well.
6. Robert was fantastic – well informed, well mannered, approachable, accommodating ! He spoke fluent English and Spanish, and had no difficulty switching from one to the other (there were 2 English and 6 Spanish speaking passengers). He answered all the questions and provided additional inside and details.

If you set your expectations level appropriately to what one day excursion to Salzburg from Vienna can offer, you should not be disappointed in this Royal Tours trip, especially with Robert as the tour guide. We were definitely not.

Booked a day trip to Salzburg with Royal Tours per hotel recommendation. The tour includes stops along a few lakes en route to Salzburg. The drive was not particularly special as there are sound barriers along the roads and it got pretty foggy early in the morning when we set out from Vienna - typical weather we were told.

Prompt hotel pick up at 7am. We were 8 people in a comfortable van. The guide Robert doubled as the driver and he gave a lot of information and interesting historical facts (even during the drive back to Vienna and hotel drop offs) as well as some practical advice when we got to Salzburg. Shooting locations from the Sound of Music were pointed out but since I only had a vague recollection of the movie, didn't think this information was important.

We made a short stop to admire Moon Crescent Lake and then a longer stop to stroll around Lake Wolfgangsee. Made very good time and got in at Salzburg by 12noon. The tour through the old town took about an hour and after that we were free to explore on our own til 4pm. Salzburg is small and 3 hours was sufficient time for lunch and walking around; this did not feel rushed at all.

This is a good option for seeing a bit more of this part of Austria. Although it costs more than taking the train to Salzburg, travel time is about the same and I enjoyed visiting the lakes.

We took the tour to Salzburg in APRIL and we chose the small van as per advised by the company to have a more enjoyable customize experience but unfortunately we ended up fighting with group over the seats as the front seats were not comfortable and they are not meant to everyone apart from the driver. Also the group was expressing their frustration if we were few minutes late and we ended up with a big argument about the whole situation and the Guide was not helpful in being fare on calming the group down.

Booked a full day tour that was advertised as the Sound of Music tour as well as a tour of the city itself. The driver was friendly enough but he was extremely rushed when he did the tour, as though he was only doing it as an obligation and it seemed he could not get away fast enough to meet his friend for lunch. He told us off for stopping to take photos, saying we would have plenty of time to do it in our free time and basically gave us a hurried speech at each place he thought was significant. We did not see anything significant to the Sound of Music and he told us repeatedly we did not have time to see the famous fountain or gazebo but if we had had less free time built in, it could have been done.
The trip cost EUR 100, which was not worth it in my opinion because for about EUR 50 you can get a return train journey and spend as much time as you like in Salzburg seeing the sights you want to see and doing it yourself.
I felt that this trip was a waste of my money and I wished I had done it myself. As it is, I want to return to Salzburg and do the proper Sound of Music tour but all I can say to anyone considering this tour is....be warned. It does not do what it says it will do and you can do it yourself for cheaper.
