Stayed here May 2004. Dumpy. If your gross quotient falls somewhere between a Hojo's and a Holiday Inn this place is not for you. The reviews in Fodors and Frommers were so positive but I think undeserving. First of all, you walk into what is now a quasi office building - the hallways are extremely dark, there is a huge hole in the wall with exposed pipes. The pension itself - on the 3rd floor - smells like mothballs and the carpet is stained and worn as is the furniture; the old walls have been painted one too many times. As for the room itself, spare old furniture but okay - this is a pension. But cracked paint on the walls, ripped sheets, a bug in the bathroom, broken safe, etc. If you close your eyes you can imagine how gorgeous this place was 200 years ago - high ceilings, pretty city views. To be fair, the location is excellent - Across the street from the museums and a block away from Spittleberg where the shops are cute and the restaurants are yummy. The subway is across the street too and the center of the city is only a 10 minute walk. Vienna is expensive and maybe you just get what you pay for. We payed 150 USD/nt. The staff is extremely nice and the breakfast was good. We were surprised by the fact that the other guests were a pretty sophisticated crowd (not American) - something we did not expect given how badly this place is in need of a renovation.
