“Watch out; 2 types of rooms!”
Reviewed October 22, 2009

This hotel/pension has two types of rooms; newly, very fresh and beautifull rooms as well as old, small, worn out (yellow rings from leakage on ceiling / broken mirror) rooms. When booking the room they used a room-name (mozart/beethoven) that we had booked, but upon arrival the rooms did not have names, but numbers; so they can easily switch you to a cheaper room (which we believe they did in our case). The location is good however; not directly in the heart of the center, but a 5-min walk is close enough!

We selected the Pension Riedl for its price and its location. And we were not disappointed with either. The Pension is located near Schwedenplatz U Station within walking distance of some really historic places.

I was travelling with my wife and one and a half year old daughter. We stayed for four nights. Because of booking late, we had to change rooms twice - sleeping in 3 different rooms during that period! We spent the first couple of nights in the room just by the reception - with the post museum right across. It was very decent sized with a very comfortable bathroom. The third night we spent in a really tiny room with just about standing space in the bathroom. And on the fourth night we got a room which was somewhere in between the two in terms of size.

The reception staff was very friendly and helpful with directions.

But just beware if you are arriving late or very early. The reception is not staffed 24 hours. Once when we were returning to the pension at around 10 in the night, we saw a gentleman sitting in the square right outside the hotel, wating to be let into the building to check in! He had been waiting there for almost an hour.It was just fortuitous that we were returning at that time. We let him in. The staff had left the keys to his room in an envelope at the reception, but he had no way first to get into the building!!

We stayed at Pension Riedl for 3 nights in April. It is located in a quiet area but within walking distance to everything. Nobody was there when we went to check in but we called the number they had left for us and they gave us the access code for the building. Our rooms were nice and clean and staff were friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay there again if we come to Vienna.

On my last minute visit to Vienna I was looking for a hotel one day in advance. Sending requests to a few places, I received quick response from the Pension Riedl offering me a large room for a single price. They sent me all instructions in the email making sure I am all set and have no problems getting in. I arrived outside of the office hours and they left the keys for me in the envelope so I could get in. The room itself was very large with huge ceilings, nice shower and it had a free coffee/tea maker. Very clean, quiet. LArge TV set. Location was great too. It is about 7-10 minutes of walk to the Stephansdom, right next to the Post building. The area is beautiful. For those interested, it is 9 Euro from Sudbankhoff(sp?) train station. 5 minute away from U (underground). In addition to everything above, the price was excellent and could not be better for a central location in Europe. I was very pleased with the stay and would definitely stay there again if I am back.

Wonderful hotel! Very nice room with high ceilings and comfortable clean beds. The room was large and had a great balcony and AMAZING showers! I didn't want to leave because the showers were so nice! It is very close to all of the big sights in Vienna and the people who work there are nice and helpful (although the reception is not open very much during the day and they don't go out of their way to help) but I was very impressed because after we had checked out one of the gentleman who worked there came running after to give me my camera's memory card that fell out my bag in my bed! I was so grateful! Although it was a bit expensive when we stayed there during a peak time of the year and extra special rates for Euro 2008 it was still a good price for the room and the location!

We booked this hotel through the Lonely Planet website.
It was a very basic hotel, with a rather small room and a very tiny bathroom with shower. Despite the ecclectic furniture it was very tidy and clean. The newly owner is not very experienced with running a hotel, but she is more than wiling to accomodate you in any way she can. The location is perfect, nearby the tram (Ring-Kai-Ring) and Stubentor underground station, close to the Donau and within walking distance (10min) of the Stephansdom, the city centre.
Breakfast wasn't not included in our price, but the owner gave us 4,5€, price for a small viennese breakfast, per day we stayed. From April 2008, breakfast will be included.

A guesthouse reflecting Vienna itself Pension Riedl was founded in 1948, by Johanna Riedl, the grandmother of the current owner. Until today the guesthouse is led by the same family, with the same philosophy of individual and private guest services. Located on the 4th floor of a palace built in Art Nouveau, in the heart of Vienna, a stay in one of our 10 rooms is as 'Viennese' as can be. We renovated six of the 10rooms in 2008, carefully following the architectural tradition and the cosmopolitan philosophy of Vienna, the symbiosis of tradition and modernity.
