The location of this place cannot be beat. Pay the premium for a room overlooking the square--you hardly have to tour Vienna--it passes by right under your window. The central location is great for getting to all the sights.
Don't let the little annoyances bother you: the rickety elevator, the charge (per stay) for the internet, the upcharge at breakfast if you want eggs or juice. It is a great value for a charming place. The owner who covers the desk can be a bit gruff, but Irmgard who is there in the afternoon is a treasure for them. She is so genuine and upbeat
and helpful.

I was there just for an afternoon on a layover between flights, but what a perfect location right in the center of things. The room was perfect for me -- small single, with shared bath for a great price. Would definitely pick this place again.

The location is really ground zero for a visit to Vienna. Surrounded by 250 year old buildings that have been kept in pristine condition the Pension Nossek did not disappoint. Check-in was friendly and efficient as are the lovely ladies that run this wonderful pension. They were ever-helpful with directions and suggestions. And if you take the trouble to talk to them about life in Vienna over the decades you can learn a lot.
A few minutes walk from the metro (though we rarely used it given this most central location). But you could really walk just about anywhere. The room (large for 4) was clean and had character, the beds were comfy, and in the hot weather the air conditioning worked VERY well. From our windows we could look down the magnificent Graben where time seems to have stopped. Absolutely beautiful. The windows closed keep out the street noise but early in the morning it fills one with serenity to poke your head out and see the same crowded stretch of the day before, now almost deserted.
Breakfasts were just fine. Plentiful and filling. There was no issue with going up for seconds or thirds. And the staff were always nearby to fill up that coffee cup. If you want a more American style breakfast (eggs etc) you will pay extra but we were always satisfied with what was offered.
They accept cash only but they made it clear when we reserved so I was prepared.
Highly Recommended.

Yes, it has an enviable location. The Cathedral of St Stephan, or Stephansdom, is the center of the center of Vienna. This pension overlooks the broad pedestrian-only Graben, which leads to St Stephan's.
Yes, it's very affordable at 125 euros including breakfast for a double room with a lovely large bath.
Yes, the staff are helpful and patient, offering directions and suggestions for your trip.

But beyond that, staying at Pension Nossek is a different type of experience. The parquet floors, high ceilings with chandeliers in the bedrooms, Persian rugs, solid wood furnishings, crisp linens and interesting art remind me that travel is more than racing from one tourist site to the next. The pension has a calmness that is rejuvenating and the tone is dignified and gentle, but not stuffy.

In the big leather chairs and sofa in the living room it's possible to talk with other travelers, catch up on the newspapers, check your email.

Unlike a hotel breakfast buffet, uniformed wait staff greet you in the sunny breakfast room, seat you and refill your coffee. The breakfast is traditional Austrian and quite good. Try the homemade plum jam.

In reviews, some people called it old-fashioned. It's true that the bedroom interiors are classic and timeless. But in the places where updates count, like the bathrooms and electronics, it's completely up to date and tastefully remodeled. A flat screen television is mounted on the wall and there are minibars in every room. My travel companion has pollen allergies and really needs air conditioning for the filtering. Air temperature here was easily adjustable for the room and was soundless.

I've been known to hyperventilate at the prospect of going off the grid, being separated from my internet connection. The interior walls of this 19th century building must be a couple feet thick and resist attempts to get wireless to every room. But here, getting out of my room to relax in the living room or breakfast room seemed normal. There's a computer and printer there for people who want to print a ticket or check their email.

It's like being welcomed to stay at the home of a family friend in Vienna who happens to live in a prime location. Not only is it immaculately clean, but there's attention to detail and charming touches that reflect the family ownership of this pension.

Things you should know:
-no credit cards for payment, Euros only.
-elevator access is larger than average
-2 metro stations within a block, two blocks
-great retail and restaurants in the area

Room Tip: Room 16 overlooks the Graben for people watching.

This was the second time we got to stay at the Pension Nossek in Vienna. I honestly can't imagine a better spot in all of Vienna. The place is directly on the Graben and is in easy walking distance of all of Vienna's major attractions (or a metro to get you there)- Its about 3 minutes from the Stephansdom- Everyone working there is helpful- by coincidence we got the same room we had three years ago- great air conditioning!
