“A fascinating small museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2011

With an interest in geography and the history of globes and map-making, we found this a fascinating little museum. As an American, it was especially interesting to see how the image of California changed over time on the globes. Another interesting comparison was the interior of Africa, beginning with a time when little was known and then later when detailed exploration had been made.

“Cool if you are really into geography”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2011

The Globe Museum is organizationally a part of the Austrian National Library (Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek), but along with the Esperanto Museum, is located in a building two blocks away from the National Library building housing the State Hall (the Papyrus Museum is in yet another building of the Hofburg complex). The museum takes up one floor of the building, so it seems more like a large exhibit than an actual "museum." Being amateur map collectors, we found many of the globes both interesting and beautiful (there were English descriptions), but I really think we would have gotten more out of it if we had known there was an audioguide. Lacking that more interesting information, after a few dozen globes they all started to run together. This is fantastic collection--arguably the world's best--but is probably only going to really appeal to geography lovers.
