“Great value and outstanding food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 10, 2004

We stayed at the Altwienerhof last April, after reading numerous reviews about its rooms, hospitality and service, as well as its world-class restaurant. The room was in fact a suite (for about E100/night), and breakfast was taken indoors as the outdoor garden was not yet ready. The service, which was somewhat perfunctory at first, became softer as we stayed on. The hotel is in a working class suburb of Vienna, about 100 metres from Gumpendorfenstrasse (I think that's how it's spelled), which takes ten minutes to get into the centre of the city. I also read the write-ups about the neighbourhood being "unsavoury", and would comment that it is well outside tourist-Vienna, but inside the true heart of a suburb. We found it absolutely fine day or night. The restaurant is worth the +-150 Euros including wine.
Service was top notch too. Do make sure that you get your room prices quoted up-front, as we had some last minute differences of opinion as regards the bill. However, this was nothing that would not takeaway from the overall experience of staying at Altwienerhof. 4 out of 5 stars.

We stayed here for four nights in March 2004 and would agree much more with Frommer's than with the previous reviewer. The Altwienerhof's neighbourhood is really nothing to be frightened of at all - it is just an ordinary Viennese suburb where respectable if not wealthy people live and work. This is part of the charm of the hotel, which is very typical of everyday Vienna in decor and style of management as well as setting. It is only about 100 metres from the underground and also on a convenient and frequent bus route to the Ringstrasse, so that you can easily get to any central location in 30 minutes if you are happy to use public transport, which is safe and efficient. The decor is quite old fashioned, but in a very traditional Viennese Biedermeier style, and all is very clean and well kept. We had a very impressive amount of space for the low room rate we paid. Management style is very friendly and relaxed, especially Frau Keller, the proprietress, who is warm and chatty and eager to help people enjoy their stay in Vienna. Her husband has been unwell, and the restaurant, which has one of the highest reputations in Vienna has therefore been closed for a while, but will apparently be reopening in April 2004.

We stayed for four days at the Altwienerhof, we were dismayed when we arrived only because the Frommer's review was so glowing. The neighborhood was somewhat frightening at night, and the room itself was dated, however I know that some of the rooms had been redone recently.
There is no air conditioning and we were there during July(need I say more). However, we never ate at the restaraunt which I heard was fabulous and it was not horrific but definitely not what was touted by Frommer's.

The hotel is close to the subway. The half pension is a great deal (just compare to the prices on the menu)! The restaurant has one of the best wine selections in the city. One point to note, though, is that there is no air-conditioning. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet. It looked like the desserts they served at breakfast were the same as the desserts on the dessert cart for dinner. The coffee was outstanding. The best thing about breakfast was that it was served outside in their flower-filled garden/patio. The furnishings in the room were also very nice. This a top-class restaurant which also functions as a hotel.
