“You might not get what you ordered”
Reviewed July 12, 2012

We stayed for four nights in June. The hotel is very stylish and comfy. The rooms are relatively large and well designed. The location is great. It is located on the mariahillferstrace - not in the center but close enough. Despite all those benefits we encountered a quite serious service issue that damaged our stay and therefore the beginning of our trip. Our reservation was specifically for two rooms with queen beds (we were two couples). Despite that we received two rooms with twin beds (separate ones). The hotel didn’t have any other rooms to offer that night. Next morning we had to pack again everything and take the luggage to the lobby. They told us that they will put them in the new queen rooms. But when we came back one of the new rooms still had twin beds. So we had to move again. We were on a time schedule and were late for a show at the opera house that we ordered in advance. The hotel didn’t offer any explanation or compensation for all of this trouble. We are frequent travelers; especially to Europe and would expect a 4 starts hotel (especially NH) to do better.

This is my 4th time stay here and second review (last review was 2009).

This time I stayed here as part of a large business group and overall it was very pleasant stay and would recommend.

My room was very large - see the photos with this review. Essentially it was more like a suite. The door opened into a large living room with a kitchenette, fridge, microwave, etc. and sofa and TV. This was linked to a reasonable sized bedroom and a bathroom (bath, W/C , sink). Overall very spacious and comfortable. There is a safe in wardrobe, although the wardrobe was located in the bathroom area which was a little strange.

A group of us arrived early (12 noon) and only I was allowed to actually check-in and get my room - I suspect it was because I have one of their NH-World cards. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful.

I didn't have breakfast this time. It is very expensive add on - 15 euro - which is far too much for a basic breakfast. WiFi in rooms is at a cost, but you can get free WiFi in lobby (free token from reception) and there is 3 PCs and a printer in lobby for use as well.

The location is great. Just behind Mariahilferstrasse and a short walk to Museum Quarter. A real issue for many is actually finding the place. Mariahilferstrasse is a big busy street and the hotel is almost hidden. There is no entrance on Mariahilferstrasse itself, rather you enter via a shopping mall / u-bahn station entrance, or you walk around the block to find the main entrance. They need more signs. If you take the undergroundtrain (U-Bahn) then at Neubaugasse station follow the signs for the Stiffgasse exit, then keep left and walk to end of hallway and upstairs into a small shopping mall of sorts. Then follow signs to rear and into courtyard... yes it is that complicated to find it!

I spent 4 days in this hotel. The address is a bit confusing you enter the hotel through a shopping center or from a side street. On a positive note In the shopping centre there is an entrance to the U-Bahn (undergroud / subway) which is very handy. The general location of the hotel is good for shopping, the museum section and central Vienna.

The hotel is OK I would not class it as good. The staff were friendly and try to be helpful. The room looked a bit tired but it was kept very clean. If you want wi fi in your room you have to pay over 10 Euro a day which is really too much given the cost of the room. On that point I would have to say I don't think I will stay there again or even consider any NH hotel in the future. In this day and age wi fi is an essential for a traveller and not a second income stream for the hotel.

Room Tip: This is not about a room but a good tip. Ask for American (normal) coffee for breakfast as they don...

The pluses on this hotel are the location and the size of the room. The hotel is just off a wonderful shopping street called Mariahilferstrasse, right above a subway station, and an easy 10 minute walk to the city center. The only thing I'd caution you on that you won't find the hotel entrance on Mariahilferstrasse, but just off it. Look for the sign just outside the Neubaugasse subway station that will point you the way. As for the room, I found it to be somewhat spacious (compared to other offering for the same price) and clean. On the downsize, I found the hotel lobby to be quite small, the bar to be near non-existent (nothing more than a a few stools and a small counter top), the hotel rooms to be spread-out of several buildings (read: a maze, lots of short staircases, and perhaps harder on some travelers), the breakfast rather pricey (17 Euros a person I think), and the wi-fi to be slow and expensive. Further, a couple of times I passed through the lobby area at night (to get a pass code for the Internet), I often found the reception desk unattended. A basic place, but will likely look for something a bit nicer next time.

A modern room with all the comforts and amenities. A friendly and helpful staff. Location is handy though the address on the web site is a little misleading as the entrance is in a parallel street after 6.30 pm but this is a small problem compared with the charm of this reasonably priced hotel. Incidentally, we took a segway tour of Vienna (my husband is 70 years old and I am 68 years) and it was a fantastic way of seeing the beautiful city.

We stayed here for 6 nights in June, and whilst the stay was fine the room was not as described and a few things were lacking. Firstly, our booking confirmation said that there was a microwave in the room which there wasn't when we arrived, but since we didn't expect to need to use it, this didn't bother us particularly but it was noted. Also, there was no kettle in the room (we English need our tea of a morning!) which is fair enough if this is not standard in Austrian hotels. However, we did approach the hotel reception to ask if there was a kettle available to have in the room. Pleasingly, at the time we were told by a friendly and helpful member of staff that she would arrange for one to be sent to our room ASAP. 24 hours later, there was still no sign of a kettle in our room so we spoke to the same member of staff who assured us that by the following morning there would be a kettle in our room. To cut a long story short, we never got a kettle and were annoyed that we had been assured this could be arranged especially since we had seen a kettle in another room that we walked past as it was being cleaned.
Also not so great was the lack of any information at all in the room aboout the hotel facilities.
We were not keen on the fact that we had to exit reception and go back outside and through another entrance to get to out room. There were often people loitering around this separete unmanned entrance and I would imagine this to be potentially unnerving for some guests.
HOwever, the room was very clean, spacious and light and the hotel's location is great in terms of both short walking distance to the main attractions and proximity to a U-Bahn station. Please note though, that this hotel is easy to miss when approaching from Mariahilfer Strasse.

In Europe, hotel rooms are known to be small. Not at NH Wien though. Here, the rooms are very spacious. You can literally waltz around in the room after an inspiring day in Vienna listening to Franz Schubert's music!

The room and toilet with bathtub are very clean. They have a microwave oven and a fridge with freezer at the mini bar area. The lighting could be improved though because certain parts of the room are not well-lighted. There's also a vanity mirror in the toilet. And oh yes, TWO televisions!

Some people have problem finding the hotel but fortunately I did not. If you are coming from Mariahilfer Strasse at street level, look out for the entrance to the Neubaugasse metro. There's a NordSee food stall at the entrance. (Note that there are several entrances to the station). Once you enter, there's a stairs on the left leading down to the metro. On the right in front of you, you should see the main Nordsee restaurant. Walk there. Then you should see a Struck bakery store. Again walk there. From there you should be able to see a couple of signboards with directions to NH Wien.

If you are approaching via metro, alight at Neubaugasse station. The two ends of the station lead to two different exits. The best exit to the hotel is via the Stiftgasse exit. This exit will lead to the stairs I mentioned in the previous paragraph and from there you can proceed to the hotel. The Kirchengasse exit will lead you to the street level on the other side of Mariahilfer Strasse. So you just cross the road and follow the directions as mentioned. If you exit the station via Amerlingstrasse or Neubaugasse, then you may have problem finding the hotel. The best way is to re-enter the station and walk (underground) to the other end of the station to find the Stiftgasse exit. If not, you will have to find the entrance at street-level of Mariahilfer Strasse, see my previous paragraph.

In summary, If you really want plenty of space in a hotel room, then this is the place for you. However, Mariahilfer Strasse is not as vibrant and happening as in Stephanplatz. So if you want to be close to the sights and crowds are, then maybe a hotel in Stephanplatz would be a better choice.
