“Avoid when the weather is hot!”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

We spent five nights at this new hotel. Although not at walking distance from the center, you can easily reach the main museums and downtown area by using the Tram #49.
Service is good - staff is nice, friendly and helpful. Breakfast is included in the room rate and is plentiful and of a very good quality.
Rooms are small but clean.
The main issue is the room temperature since the rooms are not equipped with AC.
When the weather is warm and sunny outside, it can get VERY hot in the rooms (my alarm clock is equipped with a thermometer and recorded temperatures varying between 27C and 32C at night, with the windows open and the fan on (provided free of charge).
It is difficult to get a good night sleep under these conditions.
I would not go back to this environmentally correct hotel, unless it freezes outside or unless they fix their climate control issue...Green is good, but not sweating green!

Dear JYFlorida,

Thank you very much for sharing your comments on tripadvisor.com.
We are really glad to read that you were satisfied with our service and that you had a nice time in Vienna. We are sorry that your room in our passive house did not meet your expectations. Your opinion is very important to us to improve our service quality.

Heating and cooling are significant contributors to a hotel's energy load. An in-house well supplies our cooling energy and provides the heat pump system with ground water.

We are aware that this summer was very hot and sometimes our system was not able to cool down the rooms to a comfortable temperature. We are currently investigating new options to improve the system for next summer.
Our hotel is the first hotel in the world working with this concept and we are learning new things every day but unfortunately we do not have anybody to compare with or to get advice from.

We would gladly welcome you again at Boutique-Hotel Stadthalle for your next stay in Vienna to show our improvement.

Best regards,
Stefania Aloia

This hotel should be the world standard : zero-energybalans, greenroof, green walls, renewable energyproduction, FairTrade & biofood. Fantastic to find this on 20 min walking from the historical centre of Vienna. Rooms are very clean, handy and nice (modern). Rooms-with-a-view on a purple lavendula-roof : you even smell the fragrance while sleeping like a rose in a very quiet neighbourhood. 5 min from lots of restaurants, a foodstore just at the frontstep. Staff is so kindly. I was here for business, and I'm staying in dozens of hotels around the world, but the staff is so friendly, even with the spontaneous printing of the boarding pass. I'll be back!

We stayed 3 nights and were very pleased with the rooms and service. Breakfast was lovely, served in the courtyard garden or the breakfast room. Plenty of variety and lovely breads, meats and cheeses.
Our only problem was noise from about 6.30 am from the delivery men and garbage collectors in the street below, but had we kept our windows closed we wouldn't have been so disturbed by the noise.
Convenient for tube and tram stops - we purchased the Vienna Card for 19.90 euros, which gives you the freedom of the underground, trams and buses and makes getting around so easy.

We would recommend this hotel to friends and family.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel to avoid the noise problem

I was prepared to not having an air conditioned room when booking was done. True enough when I saw the fan in the room, hot it was but when it's on, it's really fine but do open the windows though. The toilets were exquisitely tucked away in the corner of the room, good usage of space, cosy room indeed. Only hiccup we couldn't use the FOC WIFI provided in the room.
We were also offered a small discount upon checkout as we travelled by rail. Got to walk around 10mins from the train station. Friendly staff! Very clean and neat room.

I stayed four nights at the Hotel Stadthalle and enjoyed it very much. My sunny single room with a pretty view over the courtyard/garden was modern, spotless, comfortable and well furnished. The bathroom was compact but otherwise excellent. The welcome at reception was warm; the foyer and courtyard area was delightful all round, and I would agree with other reviewers in praising the breakfast. It is exceptional. Not only is there a great variety of fine things to eat (with such an emphasis on freshness and local produce) but the dining area is spacious, quiet and relaxed. Later diners can enjoy their breakfast in the courtyard. By the standards of other hotels, the rates at the Stadthalle represent great value for money. This district of Vienna is not tourist territory. While the hotel has a convenient location -- only a few minutes' walk from the Westbahnhof or a short ride (on the frequent underground trains or trams) to the centre of town or to anywhere in Vienna -- the Stadthalle's neighbourhood wouldn't have been my first choice. The quality and charm of the hotel more than makes up for the plain streets outside.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard/garden.

We stayed at the Boutique Hotel Stadthalle twice during our Austria vacation. My husband and I spent our first 3 nights in Vienna at this hotel and 2 weeks later our last night in Austria there. The hotel is very pretty. There is a living wall at the front door and a lovely little garden in the back. We loved the decor in the hallways--very interesting modern art. The staff were friendly and helpful. The morning of our very early flight back to NYC they gave us sandwiches and fruit since we would be missing breakfast. They also arranged a car to take us to the airport.

For the longer stay I booked a room overlooking the garden, which are a bit more expensive than the "Classic" rooms. We were given one in the newer, passive house on the 2nd floor. The room was very nice but dark. It didn't overlook the garden as shown on the hotel site. We had a view of the outdoor breakfast area and the parking lot of the business next door with guys outside smoking and talking loudly. If we hung our head out the window we could see the garden. Since we had paid more for a room with a garden view I went back to the reception desk to ask for a room change. The woman behind the counter was a bit annoyed. (I don't think she was annoyed at me personally, she seemed tired of having people come to her and complain about this issue.) She told me "it's a problem" that many guests expect a full view of the lavandar roof or the garden based on the photos but not everyone can have that. She then said the rooms in the back are more expensive because they don't face the noisy street. On the hotel site it says the front rooms face "the quiet Hackengasse" so that excuse was a bit silly. I suggested not advertising all the rooms in the back of the hotel as having a "lush garden view." At any rate, she changed our room to the 4th floor. It was a great room, good light, nicely decorated and quite comfortable. However, we still overlooked the breakfast area. We could see the garden fine if we opened the window (which they suggest not doing because it can interfere with the passive cooling system). Maybe I am nitpicking but it's worth mentioning since you will pay more for a Garden Room but won't necessarily get the view advertised.

Since we were just staying one night on our return visit, I booked a Classic Room which was in the older part of the house. It was big and very comfortable. It even had a couch. The room faced the street which was absolutely quiet--very little car and foot traffic. The bed was pretty funny--two singles pushed together so there was a pronounced gap between the mattresses. The bed it the other room was a true double bed.

We came to the conclusion (although this may be incorrect) that the rooms in the townhouse, rather than the passive house, have full garden views. If want a true garden view I'd suggest booking one in the townhouse, specifying that you don't want to overlook the breakfast area. It's not worth the extra money otherwise.

Here's the upshot: The hotel is an amazingly convenient walk to the Westbahnhof train station and the 49 tram to the MuseumsQuartier (from there you can walk to many other sites). There is also a metro station nearby. It's comfortable and impeccably maintained. The breakfast is great. There is no AC. We'd stay here again.

Dear Mrs. Josietravels,

we are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and would like to thank you for your review on tripadvisor. We apologize that we did not meet your expectations regarding the view from your room. We would like to assure you that it is in no terms our aim to mislead our guests or give false impressions. On the contrary, we are simply so proud that we are a hotel that has the possibility to offer a beautiful and calm garden to our guests. The view of trees, the (green) roofs of the area, the lavender roof and the green walls of our hotel are really rare in a big city like Vienna. Our garden also includes the breakfast area which can be seen from the garden rooms in the passive house and a sitting area which can be seen from the garden rooms in the "town house".

Of course the view can never exactly be the same from each room, but all these rooms face the garden and offer the quiet of it.

We are very sorry that you did not feel well taken care of when you asked for the room change at the reception. We discussed the issue with our team. We would like to apologize for the uncomfortable situation and hope, we may welcome you another time and make up for the inconvenience.

Best regards,

Claudia Plot

The accommodation was perfect! Clean, new and spacious! After staying in smaller apartments for the preceeing weeks it was a treat to have so much space and longe chairs!
We receuved a discount on our accommodation for traveling green (via train). We travelled overnight from Venice and at 9am on the day of check in, we wanted to drop out bags for a day of site seeing, instead they moved our room And we checked right away! We had a shower and a relax before a day site seeing! Its Was perfect!
