Hotel Stefanie came recommended to us by friends who have stayed there a few times. They really like the hotel. And we agree with them. The hotel was well located for our first trip to Vienna. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of items. The hotel WiFi worked very well in our room.

The hotel is centrally located. The staff is extraordinarily friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet, which is included in the room cost, is huge and really first-rate! Great wifi at no cost.

I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

We recently had an excellent 5 night stay at Hotel Stefanie. After reading the tripadvisor reviews, we decided to reserve a superior double so that we would have more space. The room was a good size, with two comfortable armchairs and a table. The bathroom was also spacious. The room was exceptionally clean. The staff were all extremely helpful and efficient. My husband and I were a bit concerned as we usually travel in countries where we have some knowledge of the language, and we don't know any German. However, this was never a problem. As people have mentioned, the breakfast was exceptional. It sounds crazy, but the loaves of bread one could slice were excellent. We also appreciated the variety of fresh fruit.
We walked everywhere from the hotel -- center of the city15 minutes, 30 minutes to the konzerthaus, 40 to the Museum quarter.

Great location, just 15 minutes walk to the center of Vienna and most of the major attractions.
The rooms are spacious, clean and cosy.
Excellent breakfast, a very nice bar with a good menu as well.
Service is SUPER.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms near the elevator, otherwise you can get a room 80 meters walking :-)

Great location, just across the Danube Canal from Vienna 1, close to lots of good restaurants; tram, subway, and grocery nearby. Nice lobby with selection of newspapers. Pleasant and helpful staff. Large single room with desk, 2 chairs, plenty of power outlets, BBC and CNN Intl. Low water pressure and clumsy, narrow shower. Exceptional breakfast buffet. Wireless signal in my room was weak, and speed was often frustratingly slow. Because the weather was mild, no issues with the AC. Exceptional value.

Room Tip: My room was on 4th floor, 411, was larger for a single, overlooking Taborstrasse; kept the window op...

When I'm spending a lot of money for a hotel, I usually expect a pretty nice stay, and I judge hotels in part by their attention (or inattention) to details. Hotel Stefanie has a lot of potential, but it fell fall short of my expectations after reading the reviews. First, the water pressure in the shower was pretty bad, but worse, the shower head was broken so you had to actually hold the shower head to shower. In addition, the air conditioning wasn't working in our room, and at one point my travel clock/thermometer said that the room was 78 degrees F (about 25 C). We told the front desk our concerns the following morning, expecting the problems to be fixed by the time we returned in the evening. Not only was it not fixed, but housekeeping took all of our towels and left us with exactly one towel. The front desk had the attitude that we were disturbing them by even bringing it up. They also refused to upgrade us (even though it was also our honeymoon). So we waited until another room in the same class was available the next day. The room happened to be next door, so it wasn't a far move. The shower head in the second room at least was properly attached, but the temperature was completely inconsistent. Without touching any other water source in the room, the shower would vacillate between really hot and really cold throughout the shower. Also, though not uncommon in that part of the world, the shower door only went halfway across, so half of the bathroom was soaked after showering. Also strange was the lighting in the bathroom. It seemed to fade and brighten randomly. There was also not a lot of surface space in the bathroom, so be sure to have a hanging toiletries bag. The towels were a nice size, but they were thin and sometimes almost worn through. One of the towels we received was dirty. In addition, one of the drinking glasses had a large crack in it, and was never replaced.

When we asked again about the air conditioning, which was also not working in the new room, we were told that it only works when it gets to be a certain temperature outside. Which makes no sense at all to me. So our room was between about 72 and 78 degrees for our entire stay.

The hotel did send us a bottle of champagne with a note apologizing for the problems, which was a nice gesture, even if the champagne tasted like it was an old, expired $5 bottle.

The worst part was that the hallways absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke--enough that it was like walking through a bar that just closed. It was awful, and completely unacceptable in a so-called nonsmoking hotel.

On a positive note, it is a beautiful hotel with lots of history and cool things to look at. They also have a library where you can take one and leave one, which is a nice touch for travelers. They are trying to be environmentally friendly and have refillable squeezable shampoo in the shower and hand soap attached to the wall next to the sink. There is no other amenity provided, though, so make sure you bring your own lotion if you use it. They also have locally sourced food in the restaurant, which was nice. In fact, the restaurant is beautiful, and the breakfast was decent.

When we arrived, the TV was showing weather and headlines, which I appreciated. There are also lots of outlets throughout the room, always a plus. However, the outlet above my night table didn't work and the camera charger was really, really hot after plugging it into another outlet (hadn't happened in any other outlet in several countries on several continents).

Overall, the Hotel Stefanie is a beautiful old hotel in a good location, but the inattention to details were a bit too much to bear for the cost of the stay. If I was staying in a dorm or a hostel, the problems would be easy to shrug off. But here I have higher expectations, as should all hotel guests.

Dear Amyj1276,

Thank you for sharing your experience. First of all we would like to express you our regret for not meeting your expectations and giving you a wrong impression. We assure you that we aim to offer a pleasant stay for each of our guests and do regret that you could not enjoy your holidays.

After receiving your remarks the reception desk offered a room change just next door in order to fix the mentioned problems. Kindly note that an upgrade was not possible, since you already were in the highest possible category of the Hotel Stefanie: the superior rooms!

Our technical department has been informed about the problems with the shower head and the outlets, but they couldn’t find any defects. Please be informed that the water pressure is regulated by an additional valve which reduces the water consumption. However the temperature should remain constant. We will keep this under continuous observation.

We regret that you still could smell smoke odor in the hallways, although non-smoking sign are clearly visible.

We are happy that under the positive notes you list the hotel itself with its atmosphere and location and thank you for submitting us your opinion. We will keep controlling our service in order to improve it and adapt it to the special needs of our guests.

Best regards from Vienna
