I was sorry I did not have more time here- If you go, definitely take an audio-guide--I did not as I usually don't but there is so much to read in the exhibit that your eyes get overtired. Wonderful paintings by Austrian artists , especially Schiele, put into historical and cultural context.
This Modern Gallery was closed on the day I visited (a public holiday) but on this sunny, hot day I relaxed and enjoyed a wonderful meal in the outdoor Restaurant next to the water feature where adults & children alike cooled off! I will return to see the exhibitions.
Gorgeously laid out. Architectural gem of a building. Wonderful staff, and most importantly, impressive art. This is a must amongst the many wonderuful museums this city has to offer.
The museum is modern and spacious with both lifts and stairs to the various floors. We arrived early and began with the Olga Wisinger-Florian exhibition on the lower floor and worked our way up (the opposite of instructions, we later realised!). I hired an audio tape but poor Olga was not deemed worthy of any explanations. However, her landscapes and still lives were delightful. As a contrast, Edmund Kalb's dark and moody charcoal self portraits were most moving. Schiele and Klimt are the main draw here but do check out Wisinger- Florian and Kalb.
Lets start with the must-see exhibition of 2019: Vien 1900. amazing collection, story-telling and important visually stunning works. worth a whole afternoon - go see it.
now for the not so great: the layout of the museum is highly confusing, the elevators needed between floors are a long wait, theres not a clear direstion map given, and theres a LOT of wasted empty, gloomy and dark space.
