Austria Trend Hotel Schloss Wilhelminenberg Wien

Certificate of Excellence

This Schloss is a beautiful building, and from the outside and in the lobby, one can easily catch a glimpse of its former grandeur. Do not come to this place expecting a gold-plated, marble-lined and frescoed stunner of a building. At about 85 euros a night for a standard room and around 100 a night for a business room, I'd say you get what you pay for.
It is a shame that even less intrusive maintenance work, such as the occasional replacement of a carpet or the painting of the walls, seems to have been forgotten since at least 1995. Scuffed walls, broken tiles and worn carpets should not bother you if you choose to stay here. On the plus-side, the rooms are spacious (the business rooms have an interesting layout with the bed placed on a sort of mezzanine) and reasonably comfortable, the bathrooms seem to have been redone recently. Also, the rooms at the back of the building offer stunning views of the city. Strangely, not even the business rooms offer an iron and ironing board or air-conditioning. Again, no big deal considering the price, but one wonders how this hotel got its four stars. The hotel's website claims that it boasts 120,000 m² of "gardens," but honestly a collection of weeds and random shrubs is a more accurate description.
The staff is neither exceptionally friendly nor expressly unpleasant, but a smile every now and then couldn't hurt.
Getting to town is less of an odyssey than one might expect, the bus literally stops right in front of the hotel, the connecting metros run frequently.

Verdict: This hotel offers a unique venue and location at an acceptable price, but its four stars and name appear to be slightly misleading.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the building offer amazing views of the city.

We were again working here at a conference otherwise I dont think we would have ever known about this place. Its well out of Vienna but it is actually quite easy to get into the city by bus which stops outside the hotel and then metro - which is much easier than it sounds. It takes about 30 mins in total. The rooms are quite basic but did have a newly refurbed shower room which was very compact but nicely done. The bed was on a mezzanine floor up a steep wooden staircase which meant the room was very spacious and for me spending so much time in it was nice to have a sitting/working area - but the stairs would not be suitable for many people and a nighttime bathroom trip can be quite risky. We were woken one night to an alarming crash from the next room which it turned out to be one of our group (and a young fit person) falling down the stairs in the night - so this needs to be considered. The biggest problem though was the heat ! There is no aircon and we got the only fan they had otherwise it would have been quite unbearable. As I was working from my room whilst the conference was going on the only way I could bear being in there was to wedge open both windows with shoes and prop open the door and this created a through draft which kept the room an acceptable temperature - and as we were at the end of the corridor it wasnt a problem having the door open. I think the cost was around €120 a night which I felt was quite steep considering the lack of facilities - there is lots of outside space but its communal so the grassed area directly at the rear got very busy later in the day with students and locals picnicing and generally enjoying the lovely views from this position. There is no swimmig pool which would immediately make it worth returning but the hotel doesnt seem to own the outdoor space so theres little chance of this. I cant imagine returning unless we were working there as it was actually perfect for a small conference when there is generally very little downtime but if you are going to see Vienna then it would be preferable to be in the city, unless the room rate was half of other hotels in the city then I cant see the reason for staying. Other guests seemed to be local - the restaurant was very good and the terrace has stunning views and it is obviously a popular place for private parties and weddings which it is perfect for. Ample parking and very quiet - but just way too hot and uncomfortable. Our final encounter with the hotel was upon checking out when we were dealt with by an man who should never be put on a reception desk - there was no plesantries and could only be described as rude. However he was an exception and every other member of staff we encountered were actually fantastic - even the restaurant staff who we kept on duty far too late a couple of evenings were cheery and good humoured and are actually a credit to an otherwise faceless hotel. The man on reception could do with spending some time with the guys from Bratislava as they seem to know far more about customer relations.

Room Tip: Hhm - not sure there are any good rooms - ours was on the first floor and overlooked the city which...

We stayed here for 3 nights. It was not too difficult to find the hotel in the outskirts even though we had never been there before. The bus dropped us outside the hotel gates. Although impressive by its size, it looks dated and needs some refurbishment to bring it to its former glory. Breakfast was pricey but ample. Travelling to and from the inner city took time and we had to be sure we did not miss the train and bus. This meant we did not have time to explore Vienna at night, a pity.
The room was very comfortable and clean and the receptionists were very helpful.

We stayed here for just one night. It was not difficult to find this hotel and the views were nice. We didn't opt for the breakfast (seemed quite pricey!). The room was great and the bathroom facilities were amazing. The hotel is surrounded by a nice bit of greenery, and it was a nice relaxing walk out. It was lovely spending the morning listening to the calls of birds and looking at the nice view of the city. Public transport to and out of the hotel was not bad, even though not the most convenient.

This Schloss is dirty (filthy actually), outdated and in urgent need to closing to make a complete upgrade. All of us felt that this location cannot stay open during a much needed remodeling as the whole place needs so many things fixed that doing the tasks in steps will just not work.

I had actually prepaid for more nights and instead I forfeited the money and went to find cleaner and nicer hotels in the city center.

The walls had marks on them even up near the ceiling (which is a very high ceiling) as if other guests had thrown their shoes at the walls.

The front desk staff is very unfriendly (which I can understand as they must spend the entire day dealing with complaints from travelers who are expecting a 4 star luxury stay and instead are greatly disappointed).

The hotel is a 20 Euro taxi fare from central Vienna. So, if you go back and forth to the hotel twice in one day, you have spent another 80 Euros!!! Save the taxi fare and stay in much better 4 or 5 star hotels in the center of Vienna.

The charm of this hotel must have passed about 20-25 years ago. The owners should be ashamed to represent that this Schloss is a nice experience of days gone by.

My friend who recommended this hotel to me (based on her stay from 20 years ago) was also in shock when she arrived. In fact, she called me and told me to cancel my reservation, which was not possible as I had prepaid without the possibility for cancellation. (Smart move on the management's part because no one would ever finish their stay and pay for the full reservation otherwise).

We had a lovely stay here - rooms were nice, staff were really helpful, the breakfast buffet is great and sitting out for breakfast on the terrace on beautiful august mornings cant be beaten. Its definitely not city centre (although it takes no time - about 20 mintues - to get into the centre. Vienna public transport is great! Especially in the roasting heat of August it was nice to be away from the city and to go wandering in the woods surrounding the hotel. The only one big minus I can say is that the hotel doesn't have air conditioning - when its 28 degrees at night it can be hard to sleep! But I guess this only applies in the height of summer. Overall I'd be back.

Excellent location (in a green area on the hills above Vienna), breathtaking view to the city, elegant building in nice condition, helpful service, delicious food, a lot of light, and spacious common areas. Excellent for a romantic holiday too.
In this part of the year it was a bit busy with meetings, presentations and conventions, but not crowded.
Our room (standard) was a bit of dissappointment, it didn't fit the overall quality of the hotel. Too small, no air condition, worn-down interior, and position in the building that should be 'staff only' area. (In a corner right beside the elevators, far from the other rooms.)

Room Tip: I don't know about the others, but our standard room did not prove to be a good choice.
