“Good hotel in the center of the shopping district”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 3, 2014

We spent five nights in this hotel for a city vacation. The hotel is quite old but has its "old style" charm. It is in a very good condition and well maintained. Public areas are very elegant, handsome staircase, nice chandeliers, clean carpets and large and bright corridors. The front desk service is very efficient and polite. Our room (315) was a corner room, with a balcony facing the main street, and an additional window on the other street. Although there are some constructions going in the street, the room was very quiet thanks to the double windows. The room was very spacious, and comfortable. Bathroom is quite small, but very functional and in a mint condition. One major drawback: the beds are hard to sleep. Their mattress is not comfortable, it is thin and hard. Room TV has a few English news channels, and all the rest is German speaking. Wireless internet is free, but exists only in the lobby, bar and breakfast area. Breakfast is very good. Additionally to the traditional buffet, you can ask the waiters to prepare for you omelets of any kind and coffee from the bar (like espresso or cappuccino). Hotel location is in the center of a busy shopping street, in a shopping district – so this is a great benefit to whoever likes it. Another benefit of the location: you don’t see the tourist crowds usually packing the city center, but mostly the locals. The hotel literally sits above the underground station, so it's very convenient to get quickly everywhere. On the last couple of days we rented a car, and parked it nearby in Generali building parking, which the hotel has an arrangement with. For 15 euros you get unlimited in-out privileges for 24 hours.
Overall, this is a great hotel, in very good condition, in the shopping neighborhood.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are great - spacious and have two windows and a balcony. Look for the "15" r...

My wife and I spent five nights at the Hotel Kummer and found it to a positive experience. Located across the street from a metro station, couldn't ask for better ease of access to the magnificent attractions of Vienna. Hotel had a bit of old-world charm to it. Staff helpful with answering questions and making reservations. Rooms smallish, especially the one we had for one night on return to Vienna from Budapest and Prague to catch flight home. Bathroon in that room ridiculously small. Good breakfast, coffee machine in room as well. Beds were quite hard; pillows only so-so. No qualms about making a recommendation, however, as it was overall good value for price paid.

Whenever I write a review of a hotel, I base it on the price I paid compared to what I have gotten in the past for the same price range. With that in mind, following is my review of the Kummer Hotel in Vienna.

Service: the man who checked me in was very nice. He honoured my only request (that being that I had a quiet room) and was informative and polite. Unfortunately, the woman on reception was not so nice. She was abrupt and unfriendly. Apart from that, the breakfast staff were polite and fine. No problems with anyone else.

Value: this hotel and its rooms are very dated. The furniture needs replacing. The beds are awful. WiFi only works in the reception area. I know this is right on the shopping strip and only steps away from a U-Bahn but for €99 a night, I expected more. The breakfast, however, is included in the rate and is quite well stocked with a great variety. Certainly, I wanted for nothing.

Sleep Quality: I'm afraid this is where it loses most of its stars. The beds were awful and uncomfortable, as were the pillows. I had to sleep with one of the pillows at my back because the mattress was so bad. I tossed and turned most of the night and the aircon (which needed to be kept on otherwise the room would turn uncomfortably hot) was just noisy enough to bother me. I can't rate very highly a hotel with such bad beds. If the sleep quality had been good, this could have been an average rating but this coupled with the inflated price means it gets two stars from me.

Location: ideal if you like shopping. It's at least a 15-20 minute walk to the major attractions but it is right on top of Neubegasse U-Bahn so you can get wherever you want to go by metro if you so desire.

Rooms: as I said earlier, extremely dated and could do with a major renovation. The bathroom is small but okay but the bath is annoying because the shower head will spray out everywhere unless you have it turned towards the wall where it is enclosed but when you do that it is an uncomfortable and tight fit to have a shower. There is an in-room safe which was a bonus, a very tiny and basic minibar and a desk apart from the usual closet for clothes, beds and ironing press.

Overall: I would not recommend this hotel while in Vienna. Location is really all it has going for it. The poor sleep quality was the worst part but the WiFi that is supposed to be free throughout the hotel was terrible. It was only available in the reception area, which is useless if you want to go to your room. At €99, this hotel really needs to offer a lot more than it does.

I was in the hotel on business for 2 nights, and to be honest, I expected more. Because I stayed in Vienna previously in 2 other less expensive hotels, i expected far more from this 4 star hotel. The single rooms are absolutely tiny, good bed and bathroom, but really tiny. Staff is friendly at the reception, but no more than that. Breakfast was good, enough to choose from and fresh too. The location is brilliant, right on Mariahilferstrasse. If I had the choice, I would stay somewhere else!

This is a very old and grand hotel in one of the main shopping streets. Staff were very helpful, my room was extremely nice and well kept and meals in the hotel were excellent and not over priced. the UBahn entrance was just outside the hotel so transport was easy. The street in pedestrians only and so there was hardly any noise at night. I would certainly choose the hotel again.

A strange combination.

Good: location - very close to an underground station (practically on top of one), in a busy shopping street (so-called pedestrianised but you can be mown down by fast cyclists everywhere in Vienna), near the really interesting Museum quarter, excellent self-serve breakfasts with good choice of hot and cold food. Pleasant staff.

Not so good: our room (for which we paid €20 extra per night for more space and quietness) was not particularly large at all - quite narrow just enough room for 2 beds joined together, 2 bedside tables, 2 chairs and a desk, with a wardrobe in a narrow lobby between bedroom and bathroom - so standard rooms must be very, very small indeed. Very, very old fashioned and dark decor, rather drab and nothing special - three star at most. True there was no traffic noise in our room as traffic around the hotel is high (it faced into a lightwell so no view but no traffic noise either) but we could hear our neighbour's shrieking laugh as if we were in their room with them. BUT it had an enormous, rather luxurious bathroom nearly the same size as the bedroom, probably worthy of 5 stars on its own - go figure!

The ground floor reception is tiny: a few seats and tiny narrow bar and narrow restaurant - not conducive to relaxation or to being in a small group (bar chairs uncomfortable) which is unfortunate as many rooms cannot get a wi- fi signal. TV limited to 4 English-speaking news channels - 2 American, 1 English, 1 Japanese.

Summary: it was ok but if going to Vienna again I think I would go to a chain hotel where facilities.are less individual but more predictable.

Location is the strongest side of this hotel: only 50 metres from metro, in walking distance to historical Vienna center. Additional plus - the hotel is situated on the main Vienna shopping street. The room was comfortable, with view on pedestrian street. Breakfast is good quality and free "champagne" makes it more pleasant ;-)
But I have a few wishes for improve. At first - Wi-Fi was not available in our room, only in lobby. At second - I suppose that 4-star hotel would have bathrobe and slippers in each room.
