“Great place!”
Reviewed April 26, 2013

We have been at Cafe Central twice : once for lunch and the second time to dinner. It's a very typical old cafe. You can feel the atmosphere of the times writers set there to write and eat. The service was very quick and efficient, the food was delicius and the dessert were wonderful. Very highly recommended!

“beautiful coffeehouse”
Reviewed April 24, 2013

Cafe Central is my most favorite coffeehouse in Vienna. It is very busy around noon (lunch) and some waiters are grumpy (and busy)... but it's so gorgeous!

“Best in class”
Reviewed April 17, 2013 via mobile

We tried several of the most highly recommended cafes in Vienna during a recent trip, and this one was the overall winner for its great cakes. Coffee was good too. Service was not good, but to be fair we were sitting in an awkward place and I think others had better treatment. It's an interesting and elegant building too. Well worth a visit.

“A good first meal in Vienna”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

We arrived on a Sunday at 1pm, dropped our bags at the hotel and went straight to lunch. It was still early and we had made an online reservation. As we ate, we noticed the crowd growing larger. Definitely book online to avoid a long wait.

Many blogs and websites mention that Viennese waiters are infamous for their rude behaviour and poor service. I had braced myself for this and expected to be offended. Not at all! In fact, not at any of the cafes or restaurants in Vienna! Everyone, even the old matron at Cafe Demel, was polite and professional.

My son asked for the signature veal goulash (shown on TA as the official photo) but it was sold out. Instead, he had shoulder of lamb with rosemary ratatouille and parmesan cheese gratin. The gratin didn't sound like much but when it arrived, we were both impressed. It was 4-5 big squares of rich, almost custard-like, savoury deliciousness (see picture and don't salivate all over your keyboard). The lamb was good too. :-)

I had some soup since I was really there for the cake and coffee. Naturally, I started off my Vienna experience with a melange and a piece of Sacher torte. Very satisfying.

Our waiter came by several times to check on us, even asking if we were happy with the food. We never felt rushed.

“Good value lunch menu.”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

Cafe Central is a tourist trap but it's worth a visit just for it's history and the experience of cafe society in Vienna. We had the set lunch menu which was 2 courses for about 10 Euro each. The food was good and typically viennese. However, the a la carte menu was more expensive.
The cakes were to die for!! If you go to Cafe Central, just go for lunch or for "Kaffee Und Kuchen".
The downside is that the sevice here was dreadful-really,really slow.!
