The building itself is worth the visit. Amazing, beautiful, awe-inspiring, &c. We visited the 1st floor gallery of European paintings -- it is an amazing collection of some European masters, in an impressive setting. We had limited time in Vienna and I am very glad we used it for the Kunsthistorisches Museum. I only wish we had more time and stamina.

I had read about this museum, but nothing prepared me to the astounding richness of it's art. The building, that in its self is a work of art, has three levels of art. The first level is Egyptian , Greek and Roman antiquities and treasures. The second level is divided to two. One side has French, Spanish and Italian Old Masters and the other side has German, Flemish and Dutch old masters. Some of the best paintings in the world from the 16th century onwards are in grand display here. The explanations beside each painting is extensive and well researched.
There is a nice cafe on the second level to take a brake.
Go early in the morning and plan on spending a minimum of 5 hours.
Get a combination ticket with the Leopold museum which is across the street. Leopold is a modern, avant guard museum.

We went to see the Breugels, and we were not disappointed. Well curated in Baroque splendour. Far too much to see, so choose carefully. Grumpy waiter in the cafe - but you almost expect that in Vienna !
