An old world style hotel right in the center of Vienna, directly opposite of the opera, which was very convenient for attending la Traviata. The location is fabulous.
A large restaurant in the foyer for breakfast and lunch, together with good function rooms for a conference. However, the hotel loses a few points for service. At breakfast the short order chefs were inexperienced and could not take more than one order at once. Overall service was slow at breakfast time, sometimes we managed to finish breakfast before they had cleared away any of the dishes. Six of us came for the ‘Business Lunch’ menu, which took 40 minutes to come and twice we reminded the staff that we had to be back in our conference at 1:30.
The main breakfast serving room is very small with a single door, which provided difficult access for several people at once. Bread was in the main section, but butter or jam were in the side room, not a logical workflow.
In the hotel bar, I was horrified to find that smoking was allowed. There were men smoking pipes and cigars, with the smell pervading the foyer. I’m asthmatic, and come from an enlightened country where indoor smoking was banned years ago, and even outdoor eating areas are all non-smoking. Maybe Freud used to smoke indoors, but he died of smoking related cancer. Some 20th century habits should be abandoned.
Rooms are on the small side, with not enough space to open 2 large suitcases at once. Bathrooms are fine.
