The hotel is a beautiful old building and our room was large and the bathroom was great. However, the smell of cigarette smoke pervades the lobby because the lobby bar still allows smoking. Although we had a non-smoking room, it still had a somewhat stale smell. The smoke detracted from the other qualities of the hotel. Breakfast was very nice. Staff was adequate, nothing extraordinary.

First I am very happy to learn, that you very much liked the historic atmosphere of the Hotel itself and the room you stayed in, but sorry to read further that there were aspects of your stay that you were dissatisfied with. Please let me explain my sincere apologies for any inconveniences occurred.
Smoking is indeed still a controversial issue here in Austria and we would like to mention that there are actually still a lot of guests who find this desirable or prefer it in a bar. The Bristol Bar is the only place where smoking is permitted throughout the entire hotel, so all other areas and our Bristol Lounge are smoke-free but I am very sorry if this was unpleasant to you and you did not feel comfortable with it.

I really enjoy my room and the view of the Opera House, excellent location. The service, the breakfast, the decorations are very good and classy. The cooling system is old, and the wifi is very slow which makes my work online difficult, couldn't connect to a conference call. This is an excellent hotel for couple or tourists, not good for business travelers. What I don't understand about hotels in the German speaking countries is that their internet is far inferior to Airbnb properties and air conditioning is treated as a recent discovery.
Hotel Bristol is a very luxurious hotel, centrally located in an area frequented by sightseers. My room was nice, and typical size for Europe. The breakfast buffet is expensive, but the best that I have ever had.
I stayed here with my wife in early July for a weekend.
We were welcomed on arrival as you are often in a 5 Star Hotel. Very polite and helpful.
We were upgraded to a Penthouse Suite. A large bedroom with a view from a balcony of the Opera House. A comfortable bed and well decorated (old style) bedroom.
The location of the Hotel is perfect and near to the main shopping areas, Opera House and Main attractions.
This is a luxury hotel.
The only reason i did not award 5 stars is related to our experience of the lovely looking cocktail bar. After a show we came back to the hotel with the intention of visiting the cocktail bar for a night cap. As we entered the Bar had a heavy smell and fumes of Cigars and a man and his partner were smoking big cigars. This was very off putting and we choose not to enter. The staff said that smoking has always been permitted (all though banned in the UK) but will be banned from November 2019
I would recommend staying here and booking an opera view suite
We went to dinner in the restorant and tasting differet options.
The presentation and flavor of foods, the service team and the grand taste of the foods was excelent.
We were very impresions of the decoration of the hotel.
