“Loved it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2013

The hotel is very pretty and our room was large and elegant. I liked that our closet and bath area could be closed off by a door which helped keep the room quiet. We were on the 5th floor, overlooking the street, but heard no noise in the room. Rooms at the back of the hotel were getting disturbed by construction noise, but not our room in front.
The front desk staff were well trained and helpful, but the concierge staff were especially excellent! They were quick with excellent dinner suggestions, extremely helpful with train and concert tickets. They arranged for the tickets quickly and were overall an excellent staff.
The location of the hotel was also excellent, being across the street from the opera house, right along the tram and transit lines, and within easy walking to all major attractions.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from construction and on a higher floor

My wife and I had only one night in Vienna as we had booked tickets for the Opera . I asked the hotel concierge to arrange for the tickets and charge my card and this was done right away. Thank youThomas.

The hotel is right across the street from the State Opera House . You cannot beat the convenience.

Old world , yes, but not stuffy. Room was elegant and the small balcony was a treat.

If you want to be in the heart of old Vienna this hotel is perfect

WE had never been to Vienna and were looking forward to staying in a grand hotel to visit what is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Maybe the Bristol was once grand, but it now is well past that stage. The location was wonderful and the service, although stiff, was helpful. The room, although quite expensive, was small and overlooked the interior air-shaft. Since the hotel is going through renovation, construction noise began at 7:00. The dining room was being renovated, so breakfast and dinner service was in a converted ballroom. All in all, not a great experience. This should not be part of AMEX's Preferred Hotel Program.

Room Tip: If you want a really great room, choose another hotel.

Dear 'FredB911'

Thank you very much for your recent stay with us as well as for your honest feedback through Trip Advisor.

With great concern I read about the inconveniences you encountered and about your dissatisfaction regarding the wear and tear of the hotel. Please accept my sincere apologies for any trouble caused and rest assured that I have taken your comments very seriously. The renovation of our ground floor (lobby, bar and restaurant) is almost finalized and many other projects are already planned. Last year we renovated the complete banquet floor and 10 new rooms and suites have been created. The Hotel Bristol currently undergoes a major transformation and rejuvenation and I would feel very honored to show you the very high level of quality for which we are usually known in the not too distant future.

With my best personal regards,
Gerald Krischek - General Manager

Beautifully furnished very large room with opulent bathroom decorated with amazing marble work. Throw in heated towel racks, huge amounts of closet space and attention to detail on all aspects of the hotel and you have a winner. I had a small issue with the doorman, Management bent over backwards to remedy the situation and I came away impressed with their desire to give every guest an amazing hotel experience.
There were a few hiccups, gym was small, and Wi-fi was intermittent throughout my stay, but staff were wonderful, genuinely concerned about the quality of your stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room over-looking the Opera Hall, then if a performance is on, throw open your windows and...

As part of the Luxury Collection, I was expecting a bit more grandeur as befitting the designation. Having stayed in other units of this group, I was a bit disappointed as we drove up in our taxi. The entrance on the street was rather non-descprit and small. It was surrounded by a number of retail shops including a bank and looked nothing like the photos on the website. Once inside, the lobby was very small and though a bit ornate, didn't give the feel of a luxury hotel. Then as this is a Level 5 SPG rated hotel, this may be one of the reasons it's not rated as high as the Hotel Imperial. Having passed by the Le Meridien later on by foot, I thought their facade, foyer and lobby was more indicative of what my expectations were in this classic part of town. In retrospect, I was expecting something more similar to the Westin Grand Palace in Madrid with its facade and lobby. Very old world with a grand character throughout.

Back to check in. The bellhop and doorman were very helpful and friendly. The front desk staff were both friendly and professional during this phase. Gracious in their demeanor and nice smiles. Identified me as a Platinum member and informed me as to my choices. The check in area is small and it luckily wasn't busy when we checked in. If it was, it could be a bit hectic as there is only room for 2 guests to check in at one time. There isn't the room for a separate Platinum/Gold check in.

Now on to the rooms. The elevator was quaint, old world and small. Don't expect speed either. During the stay, it could be a bit frustrating with the access times. There is only one guest unit for the entire hotel. I don't think the complex is that big and perhaps that is why. The room was supposedly an upgrade and at first was a bit disappointed. It was bit musty and you could detect the faint smell of cigarette smoke. Found out later after walking out on the balcony, that I peered over and saw some cigarette butts on the ledge. The prior guests must have been smoking outside with the doors open. The room was a bit on the small side for an upgrade but upon seeing our friends room who are not of Platinum status, it could be considered an upgrade. There was a small and separate sitting area and a small walk in closet. The water closet was in a separate room with its own vanity. It was big enough for my spouse and I to unpack and organize our belongings as there are a lit of shelves and areas to put your bags and lay out your items. Bed was very comfortable and although a bit too close to the elevators, there was a door with some glass that could be used to close off the sleeping area and thus insulate the area from noise outside the room. This proved to be very effective as we didn't really here much noise from outside the room. There wasn't as much outside ambient noise although our room was facing the Ring. Our room was on the 5th floor but our friends who had a room on the 3rd facing the Ring said that they didn't really hear much outside noise either.

We only dined here utilizing the continental breakfast that was included with our SPG status. It was actually very good compared to similar experiences in Europe like the Le Meridien in London. There were a great many choices especially with beverages and pastries. The hot choices were limited but of decent quality. A good way to start off the day. There are many Vienna coffee houses in the area but we tended to visit them during our breaks when touring the old city.

All in all, our stay was very good. Service was very steady across all areas and really no complaints. The staff was pretty friendly in most cases but in the breakfast area, they seemed to be a bit stiff. Perhaps it was the senior person who was quite stern in all his mannerisms. The staff there to his credit were most efficient. Would I stay here again? Perhaps if using SPG points but would probably try the Imperial if paying to compare the experiences. I would use the term pretty satisfied to describe our stay here.

Room Tip: Ask for upper floors facing the two main streets away from the lift.

Dear 'KamikawaSan'

Thank you very much for your detailed feedback. I was happy to read that you were satisfied with the level of service provided but concerned to learn that your stay with us did not meet your full expectations. Regarding the wear and tear of the hotel I am very happy to let you know that we just finalized the restoration of our lobby area and that our restaurant is currently undergoing a very extensive restoration. Beside the renovation of our complete banquet area and the bar as well as the formation of 10 beautifully new suites and rooms last year additional projects are already planned. I would feel very honored to show you the result and convince you of the charm and the grand style for which the Hotel Bristol is usually known next time you will stay with us. Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconveniences you encountered and rest assured that we will take your comments into consideration for the future, as it is the goal of our team here at the Hotel Bristol that our guests feel as comfortable and happy as possible.
With my best regards, Gerald Krischek - General Manager

Location: Excellent then downhill after that
Rooms: Large old smelly need updating. We stayed 6 nights and floors were not vacuumed and floors never washed in the bathrooms. Just had little tidying done and towels changed as well as sheets. Who oversees the cleaning staff? Stains on bathroom floors and walls never cleaned
Staff: Bartender was the most personable among the bunch. The doorman helpful as well as concierge . Front desk hit and miss. Some never even asked our names before giving us back our room key. Found out on our third day that breakfast buffet WAS included! Their response was oh sorry
Breakfast Buffet: average food was sitting in heat trays long before we came down to eat. They are renovating so there is no restaurant just assigned rooms.
Overall: should not be considered part of the Luxury Collection Hotels
Would stay down the street at the Grand Wien or the Ritz next time

This hotel is a Starwood, old, elegant and a stately feel. It is perfectly located across the street from the Opera House and close to everything. We were given a lovely room, but had to change after continuous, disruptive, tremendous noise that came from people from the Middle East who made so much noise around the elevator area day and night, that we could not rest or sleep or hear ourselves think!

After complaining, they moved us and our second room, #470, was larger and very elegant and quiet! It had a walk out balcony and a direct view of the Opera House also. The bathroom was enormous with double sinks plus there was a large walk in closet along with more in the bedroom.

Because the dining room is being renovated, we had breakfast room service which was prompt and quite good. They are serving breakfast out of two rooms downstairs and the food was not satisfactory.

When we arrived, we were greeted with a very sincere note from the front staff and white roses, champagne, fruit and goodies in celebration of my “big” birthday. It was a lovely and generous gesture, which we appreciated. The two men at concierge were wonderful; always helpful and friendly. The manager was sympathetic to our "noise problem" and was most helpful.

If we were to recommend this hotel, we would suggest that you request and demand a room way away from where a large group of loud people are staying and the manager will know exactly what you mean. The staff at this hotel is wonderful. I loved the “old time” elevator that had two corner seats in it. Because of its central location, wonderful staff and lovely rooms we would recommend this hotel, but if you like peace and quiet ask to be moved if there is a noise problem from other guests.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with the walk out balcony on the 4th floor overlooking the Opera House.
