Owner description: The Cultural World Heritage Site of Schönbrunn Palace is Austria's most frequently visited tourist attraction. In the palace the residential and state rooms with their original furnishings and decorations convey an authentic impression of the imperial lifestyle. The park and gardens surrounding the palace make Schönbrunn in a unique synthesis of Baroque art as well as providing a convenient and highly popular recreational area for Vienna's population.

What a thoroughly beautiful place. Even in the middle of a cold March, the gardens were stunning and the insides even more so. My one regret was that we opted for the slightly cheaper Imperial tour since we thought 40 rooms would be enough, but actually wish we'd paid the extra couple of Euros for the full tour. The Imperial tour only talks about and shows you Maria Theresa and Francis I's time in the palace and it would have been nice to get a wider sense of it's history. Other than that, top notch even for such an obvious tourist attraction.

Should go when it is not crowded. Must pay for the extended visit (40 rooms), because they are worth the extra euros. A bit expensive (15 euros), but necessary to know imperial Vienna life. The gardens are not much during the cold time, but they are free anyway.

The impression of opulence, extravagance of the Hapsburgs is overwhelming. You sense the end of the era and wonder why they just didn't get it.

Easily reached on the U4 subway, the palace was busy even on a cold March morning. Definitely worth a visit as it's an impressive castle.

Buy tickets online if you can to save time. You can also use an electronic kiosk to buy tickets in the visitor entrance if you only plan on seeing the interior rooms and the gardens.

Note, you CAN visit the gardens with just the "Imperial Tour" or "Grand Tour". If you but the "Classic" pass, you get some minor extras that may not be worth your money (entrance to the small hedge labyrinth, panoramic terrace atop the Gloriette",etc). If I did it again, I'd just get the Imperial Tour or Grand Tour. in my opinion, the best rooms are on the shorter Imperial tour.

There's a nice sit-down cafe in the Gloriette up on the hill. We had a good lunch there but it's not speedy or self-service. You can also just have some coffee/tea and very good streudel there.
