Elixir d'Amour was on the night we visited. Everything was just perfect. Accoustics were excellent, the performers - absolutely fabulous and the orchestra were in top form. We could not have asked for more. Highly recommended

A visit to this opera house was supposed to be the highlight of our visit to Vienna but we were badly disappointed because of the poor seats. We had booked online and the seats were in the "Halbmitte" in the gallery, quite high up and a little to the side, but these seats were NOT described as "restricted view" which they very much are. We could see only half the stage and even if we leaned forward the main singers were very often out of sight. These were not expensive but not the cheapest either, for 45 Euros a seat I do not expect a restricted view. Such a shame because the performance of L'Elisir d'Amore was just perfection, the auditorium has excellent acoustics. The building is stunning from the outside as is the internal staircase and most public rooms, but the decor in the auditorium plain by comparison. And the food and drink in the bars is reasonably priced. I do wish they had described the seats more honestly.

When in Vienna, there are many shows you can watch...at almost every corner of the main shopping street there are people selling tickets for "musical samplers" the shows generally consists of a little chamber music with fantastic soloists, a few opera songs, a touch of ballet, but all top caliber and fantastic! But... if you want to watch a full opera at the state opera house without having booked in advance... you still can.... there is a door on the right side of the building (line up before 4:30) for the standing areas. You can choose between the balcony for three euros (don't know how that looks like) or orchestra centre for four euros .... yes four euros ... you will be at the end of the orchestra center... they have this little boxes on the standing bars which translates the opera to your language... nice! It entails standing throughout the show but for 4 euros? However, you still have to dress-up for the opera even if you are standing :) don't forget to rent opera glasses! Enjoy!

I booked my tickets on line from Canada and got good orchestra seats. The voices, orchestra, staging and direction were top notch as was the very serious audience. Not a cough, nary a whisper nor rustle of a cough candy being unwrapped. Also no applause and no laughter even when the work was funny (intentionally or unintentionally). At the end the audience went wild with 15 minutes of applause and curtain calls- pent up enthusiasm was unabashedly released and showered on the very deserving performers. The building is one of the nicer 19thC-style opera houses with large grand public areas. The open-face sandwiches and strudels sold in the buffets were delicious and reasonably priced. There were even enough washrooms! A tip: the Sunday 11AM matinees are only 5/10E a seat any where in the house. I bought a 10th row middle seat for Cilea's Adriana LeCouvreure for 10E on-line. Since I was running out of time I sacrificed it for a visit to Hundertwasser House and the Belvedere instead.
Advice: book on -line directly from the Opera House. Pick your tickets up before the performance. Remember you can't see the stage well or not at all, from those romantic looking boxes on the sides of all 19th C theatres. Standing room at the back of the orchestra is cheap, but what a production to get it!
