We toured both the Vienna and Budapest Opera Houses on this trip. While Budapest was probably the more grand even though it appeared a bit smaller, the tour was a lot more expensive and a lot less thorough with a so-so-guide. Our guide in Vienna was excellent; she took us throughout the Opera House - even backstage as the crew was setting up that evening's performance! This Opera House was badly damaged during the final days of WWII, but has been rebuilt to its original grandeur - don't miss it!

Although the State Opera is certainly a beautiful edifice, it pales by comparison to the interior. We were lucky enough to have one of the principal musicians of the opera to guide us and we were inspired even more with each succeding room, ceiling, floor paintings, sculptures, etc. How they manage to perform a different opera every night I can't even imagine the logistics involved in doing that. We even got to see the "green room" where the orchestra musicians are at rest before each performance. This is definitely a world class place to visit.

If you think about it try to get tix for an opera. Performances apparently often sell out. No wonder. The opera house is beautiful. There are translation screens at every seat and you can pick your languge. Get there early if you want to purchase program. We got there just before start of performance and they were sold out. Note that if you get box seats, only the first row has translators

The opera is a beautiful building both from the outside and inside. We came an hour before an opera and didn't get the standing tickets but tickets for one of the booths on the back row. That was a noce experience for 11 euros although the visibility was limited. There was space for 7 people in each booth and we had our own wardrobe. I would def pay a little extra for that experience.

Come early because the tours can get quite crowded! Taking the guided tour (which is the only option for visiting the opera house) is quite interesting and is very cheap (as I student I think I paid something around 2 euros). One of the only opera house tours in which we were able to go backstage and peak around. Beacause it is so cheap, I would recommend going. With your ticket you also get free entrance to the opera museum across the street. This was very small and nothing special- something you could definitely skip.
