Took the guided tour and really enjoyed it. The public rooms are all beautiful. Hope to attend an opera there one day!

We went to the opera house for a ballet and an opera. The theatre is amazing with some stunning architecture and the performances are of the highest standard.

I got standing tickets to see a Rossini opera so I could see the building but ended up loving the opera and forgot to tour the building. The theater is grand to say the least, and it was an experience I am so glad to have stumbled upon. I will admit some aspects of getting standing room tickets were bothersome - you have to wait a long time to buy tickets, then wait again before they let you in to the theater, and then finally you can get in and tie your scarf to the bar to reserve your standing spot. Parterre is definitely the best - it's at the back of the ground floor. The other standing room sections are in the balconies. The staff were not super friendly when I asked about this whole process. In the end, though, just have patience. Parterre tickets are only 4 euro, so you can stand to deal with the waiting and crowdedness (there are not spots at bars for everyone who had a ticket - you may have to stand in the aisle - with no view of a screen that provides translations of the opera). And at the end you just may become ab opera fan!

we saw an opera and were thrilled! If you can get tickets, it's worth the while. Also the whole opera was translated into english on these tiny screens on the back of the seat in front of you!

Avoid, as we should have done, booking through online Ticket Agents.
If you book using the State Opera House website, you pay just the face value of the ticket.
Going through an online agent you can pay between 3 x and 5x over the real price, particularly for the popular performances.
Also 98% of the men were wearing a jacket and tie.
We enjoyed the experience of the Opera, but found paying an extra £55 for two tickets to the Agent rather annoying.
