Owner description: HAUS DER MUSIK is Vienna's modern, interactive Sound Museum. Five floors are dedicated to the fascinating world of music and sound. Test your own musical talent on the Virtual Conductor, enjoy a short version of the famous New Year's Concert, compose your own waltz with the interactive Waltz Dice Game, learn more about Mozart, Strauss or Beethoven and experiment with pitch, sounds and musical instruments. It's the only one of its kind in the world.

My 12-year old loved it, but it was way too expensive for a couple of rooms. There is a lot of lessons (pc's with touchscreen & headphones) where you learn about the way sound is made. You can choose between German & English and it's kind of interactive. There is one room acoustically perfect with examples of sounds and the interactive "conduct your own philharmonie" game, which was actually great. If you wave your stick just right, you get to see song 'till the end, otherwise the musicians starts to rebel. You can buy your "certificate" in the gift shop for 2.90€. Shop is waaay too expensive for anything else.

I'm not a museum fan but this place is so different. I think its a must see for music lovers. In the first floor they Show yearly concerts of the vienna orchestra which is amazing. the second floor was not so interesting. it had some sicentific information regarding hearing. the third floor was like a fairy tale. there is a room for each musician Beethoven, Mozart, schubert etc. They give an an audioguide for this floor (its incuded in the price) which makes the journey even better. The museum can be a bit pricey for people not interested in music, but for people like me it's certainly worth it

We went to the Haus der Musik in the evening, which was a good idea...quite empty so we had access to the exhibits. The concept is good, but the exhibits were broken. More than half the interactive exhibits were not working (in one hall, we only got one of the six or eight computers to really work). The one that did work (an interactive filter of your sonogram) was pretty good. The others were promising, but the interactive features didn't work (the microphones were broken or the touch screen was not working).

Similarly, they have some potentially interesting interact exhibits on the top floor, but there are only three 'rooms', so you really won't get much time in them (even with the the museum mostly empty, there were three couples camped out in each of the three rooms).

The exhibits would make a great app for a computer, so you could have reliable hardware. The rather high price (12 Euros, same as for the Albertina) would be justified if the exhibits worked. If you are interested, I'd try to ask to make sure the exhibits were functional (not that the person at the ticket counter would know...)

I could wax lyrical about the wonderful historic documents or the amazing sonic environment I encountered, but the highlight for me was the room with all the pipes and speakers which play sounds. I made my girlfriend listen to one of the pipes and IT FARTED DOWN HER EAR!!!!!!!!

I laughed so much I had an asthma attack and had to leave. But it was worth every strained breath.

Top value.

This museum should be earning four star reviews. It is well laid out, imaginative and full of interesting interactive exhibits. The problem was that when we visited, so many of the interactive bits did not work. It was very frustrating to hear about a sound experiment and then find you could not experience it as the earphones or the microphone was not working, or the touch screen didn't respond or it was labeled 'out of order'. In an interactive museum the equipment is going to get heavy use so it needs to be checked regularly. At the end of the visit you are asked to fill in an interactive visitors survey - the touch screen did not work!
