“Charming and convenient”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2014

Great location , just a short walk to the old city and very close to two train stations, including the airport express train .The rooms are varied and full of character as is the whole hotel . Hotel staff were very efficient and friendly. A great breakfast selection including Gluten Free and Lactose free options. I would stay in this hotel again.

We just loved this hotel, situated in a great location , just mins from the city centre, nestled into a quiet cobbled courtyard. This is a well maintained and cared for hotel. I must say the staff at reception were the nicest hotel staff I have ever encountered. Genuinely friendly and incredibly obliging not to mention professional. Our room was a good size, beautifully decorated and spotless.
Breakfast was lovely with a good selection of foods to choose from. I particularly enjoyed the selection of fruit salad.
In the evenings, after our days excursions ,we would sit outside in the courtyard to have a few drinks which was so peaceful and relaxing. I was able to avail of the wonderful beauty salon and Austrian restaurant right across the yard which was a great connivence to us.
Anyone would genuinely find it hard to fault this little gem of a hotel and I would without any doubt love to book this hotel again.

Spent 4 days there while visiting friends in Vienna. Could have not picked a nicer place outside the inner city. Parking for my rental car was also good just below the hotel.
Also the restaurant and café were great. I will definitely stay there again when in Vienna next time.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2014

My wife and I recently spent eight nights at the Biedermeier in connection with some work I was doing near Vienna, and on the whole we enjoyed our stay a great deal. The people side of the operation is the biggest plus factor: everyone working at the hotel was friendly and very helpful, and very patient with _mein schlechtes Deutsch_.Virtually all the staff spoke English, too, when that was necessary, and they cover other languages well. Two younger members of the staff, Sabrina and Melanie, were particularly helpful and friendly; note to the Manager: give both of them a raise in pay!

The establishment is located on both sides of a long 19th-century passageway that also features a few small shops, and is all the more interesting, and generally quiet, for that reason. The breakfast buffet was quite good, as is often the case in the German-speaking parts of Europe; when the weather is fair you can take your tray outside to a small terrace and enjoy Frühstück under the trees. Internet service is free and, while a little on the slow side, was dependable for us. Particularly appreciated was the air-conditioning in our room, as we were there during a hot spell.

There are two restaurants in the hotel, with the more informal of the two (Weissgerber Stube) offering consistently good smaller and larger-plate dishes and the full run of drinks, served at outdoor tables in good weather. The more formal indoor restaurant looked good as well, although its offerings were a little more substantial than we were looking for, given the weather. The neighborhood is not particularly well-served with other restaurants, but Trimelli, a small Italian place across the street, and Sternzeichen (Chinese, about three streets further out from the center along the Hauptstrasse) both took extremely good care of us. There are banks and a couple of small food markets within a few steps of the hotel entrance; the Rochusmarkt, a small outdoor market also serving various sorts of food, is no more than two minutes' walk away. The center of the city is likewise not far; when we walked in to visit the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) it took us no more than 12-15 minutes each way.

The term "Grand Hotel" is a little over-the-top, however. Our room was quite small, with little by way of furniture that would have made it easier to work, and the decor was, well, tired. To be fair the bath, while also small, was up to date and completely clean. There may well have been larger and better-appointed rooms elsewhere in the house -- all we experienced was our own room -- but knocking a few of them together to make bigger accommodations might be worth the investment. (Incentives to do so might be lacking, however, as the hotel seems to have a steady flow of tour groups who stay for just a few days, and who get dragged out into the world so early in the morning, and brought back so late, that the amenities in their rooms probably don't matter much.

In short, there is much that's good about the establishment, and little or nothing that would send up alarms; as one other reviewer put it, you won't go wrong at the Biedermeier. You will also definitely feel welcome. But maybe it ought to be called the Mercure Quaint Nineteenth-Century Inn or some such, rather than the Grand Hotel...?

Room Tip: I'm wondering whether upper-floor rooms might be a little larger than ours -- ? Dunno --

Admittedly, I booked through Priceline's "Name Your Own Price" feature, so I really had no idea what I was going to be getting for a hotel. I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of this one. In fact, we toured six European cities in our trip and I have to think that this was probably the best quality hotel that we got from any of our stays.

The hotel is just outside of the historic inner ring and only a few minutes walk from the metro. Trust me, it's close enough to everything that you really do not need to worry about the location. And, it's down a little side street so you won't get a lot of outside noise from the streets while you're trying to sleep. If it's noisy, it's because of the other guests staying there.

The staff was pleasant and helpful in giving us information for getting around the city. The price was very reasonable. The room was comfortable (this was one of the few hotels we booked that DID NOT give us a bed that was two separate mattresses pushed together, so that's a plus). About the only thing I can't vouch for is their breakfast because we didn't get a chance to try it.

All in all, you're just not going to go wrong staying here unless you either have unreasonable expectations or extravagant taste in hotels. Highly recommended.
