Owner description: For centuries the Vienna Hofburg was the centre of the Habsburg empire. Today the palace houses three museums which afford historically authentic insights into the traditions and everyday life of the imperial court: The Imperial Apartments with their original furnishings and decoration, the Sisi Museum with its sensitive staging of the empress' life, and the Imperial Silver Collection which contains a comprehensive range of tableware and other utensils used at the imperial court.

We loved it. The Imperial Apartments and Sisi Museum was good; extensive and interesting. Great context for Habsburg history. The Treasury next door was better. There were TWO of the imperial crowns there, as well as the "Spear of Destiny", which allegedly pierced Christ's side while on the cross (whether or not it ACTUALLY was, this artifact was traded back and forth by European rulers and monarchs for centuries).

A huge complex of stone for an interesting exploration of exterior space and design set within a park scene. Most interesting is the main courtyard that has a tower with 3 clocks. Exited out the rotunda into Michaelplatz which has Roman archaeological remnants exposed beneath street level and a contrasting modernist building facing the baroque Hofburg.

A rare opportunity to look at how a great emperor and his family lived: their dwelling quarters, splendid porcelain and silverware collection used for lavish banquets , and the tragic story of empress Sissi. Well worth the entry price.

Great complex with a lot to see and do. The tour of the silver collection and imperial rooms was awesome too. Definitely worth a visit. A bit on the expensive side though. Be prepared to shell out a lot of money at each of the museums!

We attended a 90 minute Strauss/Mozart concert with opera singers that was a highlight of the trip. I had been concerned it would be touristy but although the audience was tourists the concert was excellent. Highly recommend.
