Owner description: For centuries the Vienna Hofburg was the centre of the Habsburg empire. Today the palace houses three museums which afford historically authentic insights into the traditions and everyday life of the imperial court: The Imperial Apartments with their original furnishings and decoration, the Sisi Museum with its sensitive staging of the empress' life, and the Imperial Silver Collection which contains a comprehensive range of tableware and other utensils used at the imperial court.

Due to lack of time we could only visit the treasury.....worth every penny. What a brilliant collection.
No complaints.

Right smack in the historic area of Vienna is this grand ole duke. Majestic when approaching from the main gates, with open spaces, statutes, fountain and horse carriages (ride for a price).

Concerts and operas are held in the hall during evening hours.

Explore with a map in hand. Several times, I got lost in the labyrinth of smaller buildings. But well worth exploring, with many quaint shops.

If you are a watch enthusiast, drop by the clock and arch museum tucked away in a nondescript corner. Three stories of horological treasures not to be missed. I was blown away by a horological masterpiece created by a monk (no less) in the 1600s.

Visit and learn about the real Hapsburgs... not the hollywood fantasy. The imperial apartments are, in many cases, just as they were in the 18th and 19th centuries. The true story of Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) is sad and moving, and the Silver Collection is vast and impressive. The anecdotes you'll get on the guided tour are revealing and often funny :)

To see the Palace is to understand the level of power and wealth that era exuded. To say something like the Biltmore in America is but the wing to this place, is an understatement.
