Owner description: For centuries the Vienna Hofburg was the centre of the Habsburg empire. Today the palace houses three museums which afford historically authentic insights into the traditions and everyday life of the imperial court: The Imperial Apartments with their original furnishings and decoration, the Sisi Museum with its sensitive staging of the empress' life, and the Imperial Silver Collection which contains a comprehensive range of tableware and other utensils used at the imperial court.

I love Vienna and this was one of the places on my list to visit. My advice is allow 2-3 hours, take a tour guide, or at least the audio guide, because there are few signs telling you what you're looking at. in any event a tour guide just knows so much more than you'll ever get in a book and the man we had was brilliant. He made it interesting, as if such a beautiful place needed it, but we thoroughly enjoyed it and it is pure opulence.

The Hofburg is part of a huge complex of former imperial buildings (including several musea, a greenhouse and the national library), circling the public gardens. The outside is lined with sculptures from mythology. When you're in the gardens, you need to walk around to the NE side to find the entrance.
The main tour is in 3 parts.
The Silver collection is one of the largest I've seen and the audio guide provides interesting historical context. The porcelain collection (though more modest than the silverware) is particularly beautiful.
The imperial apartments are interesting in that they provide an interesting view on the daily life of the emperor and his consort, but often more surprising in their sense for functionality than display of wealth.
The Sisi museum is just that: an interesting tour of the unhappy(?) life of the emperor's wife.

Though not part of the main tour or the Sisi ticket, the Treasury is perhaps the most interesting part of the Hofburg, and definitely recommended.

A tour of the Imperial State Apartments in the Hofburg palace complex is highly recommended - one is overawed by the magnificence and opulence, and is able to form a very good impression of the power and reach of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The Sisi apartments are fascinating and poignant.

I was only in Vienna for three days and originally the Imperial Palace was not even on my itinerary, but I am glad my friend convinced me to go. Not only was the Imperial Silver Collection impressive and nicely displayed but what I learned that day with the aid of an easy-to-use audio guide was quite a history lesson. We also toured the palace apartments and the Sisi museum, which so eloquently introduces you to the personal life, joys and sorrows of Empress Elizabeth. I would definitely suggest this trip to anyone but be forewarned, the entire tour is quite long, easily 3 hours if not more, so not for those low on patience.

Already a WOW from outside, where there are many horse carts are parked. The interior is fabulous. Unfortunately there was no AC in the museums inside, so it wouldn't be good to be inside with the crowd (it's always crowded) during summer. I didn't get inside the museums for this reason, because I always came after the opening hours. Winding down is good at the park in front of the magnificent bibliotheque (library).
