Owner description: Founded in 1498 by Emperor Maximilian I, this internationally renowned youth choir has been heard around the world ever since. In Vienna, there are two key venues to experience the Vienna Boys Choir: their own concert hall, MuTh, and the Imperial Chapel in the first district. At the MuTh, you will be able to the choir's newest programmes; in addition, the choir regularly presents world music and fully staged children's operas at MuTh. The boys take turns at singing Mass in the Imperial Chapel (Sundays at 9.15 am, September - June; the Chapel is closed in from July to mid-September); note that this is a sung Church service, with the musicians performing on the organ loft, out of sight for most of the service. The boys perform alongside the men of the State Opera Chorus and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. After the service, the boys descend to sing one motet in front of the altar.

We heard them at Sunday mass service at Hofburg chapel. We do not get to see them until the end when they comeon stage. They sing beautifully and it was lovely experience, however the seats are narrow, the mass is in german so difficult to understand so everyone may not like it.

One has to make sure what they will watch is really a concert or a church service. The Vienna Boys Choir does both but each is quite different from one another. I made sure what we booked for (39 Euros) was the concert. It was an awesome experience as the Muth theatre is intimate and even though we were towards the back, you can see all the kids' faces and hear every little nuance. I can imagine that the experience will be totally different if one attends a church service where the focus is in the service and not the singing.

I thought I had bought tickets to see the Vienna Boys Choir, however on arrival found was a full Catholic Church Service (starting at 9:15) and that the boys choir was located on L3 out of view. Although the singing was amazing during the service, I was slightly disappointed that you couldn't see them. At the end of the Service, 14 or so boys came down into the Church with conductor and sang one song. This was very beautiful. Some people had left by this stage and missed out on this last performance as had booked standing tickets to the Spanish Riding school that started at 11am. So if you are planning on doing both on a Sunday - unless you have seats at the Riding School - you are either going to miss end of the Choir or end up standing in bad spot at Riding School. Note we did get the Choir tickets by walking into a ticket outlet on Augustinerstrasse -the day before.

We joined the concert on Sunday morning in the Hofburgkapelle. Actually we wanted to take the tickets for the standing positions, but then we learned that those are free of charge. The concert was a part of a Sunday mass accompained by the choir songs. The boys were on the balcony of the Chapel. At the end they ran down and sang one more song. It was really a nice performance!

Hearing their voices drift down from the upper balcony during mass made them sound like angels or ghosts. This is not my ussual type of music but in the context and setting they were in, it is all worth a listen.
