“Hip and Welcoming”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2013

This is a resturant that's frequented by Viennese and an international crowd of visitors. Far from a tourist trap, Englander offers excellent food (menus are availalbe in English), very friendly service and has a clientele largely of Viennese designers, journalists, musuem staffers and media professionals. Very good food, reasonable prices and a fine wine list. It's such a gem that I hesitate to "publicize" it, but it really deserves recognition. Lunch or dinner.

“Very good food indeed”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2012

It may not look like it, but the food here is of a very high quality, not to mention the cakes. Lots of atmosphere, charming old waiters, beautiful rooms, international papers. Everything a cafe should be. Seek it out! We had fantastic in-season goose.

“Excellent food and atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2012 via mobile

They only had a German menu, but the waiter translated it for us (to English). We ordered fried fish (Carp) with potato salad on the side and greens, and a boiled beef with mash potatoes and horseradish cream. Both were very fresh and tasty. Nice wine selection too.

“Bright Yet Cozy Vienna Coffeehouse”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2012

I suppose Cafe Englaender is more like a bar/restaurant than a traditional Vienna coffee house. Whatever it is, Englaender is a bright and comfortable place to stand at the bar for a drink or snack, or to sit down for a meal. Among other beers, the bar serves Reininghaus Jahrgangspils, a magnificent pilsner beer that I have seen no place else in Vienna. My selection from the menu was "Gulasch vom Styria-Beef". I ordered the small portion, but regret that I did not get the large. As for the service, it was somewhat difficult to flag down the waiter, making this about the norm for Vienna.

As with most restaurants in Vienna, there are separate smoking and non-smoking sections. The evening of my visit, the crowd seemed to consist mostly of Viennese, but I have the impression this place is popular with expats and visitors to the UN Vienna International Centre or the Austria Centre.

Cafe Englaender is on the east side of the First District about a block from Stubenring, so it is extremely convenient for those traveling by foot between Stadtpark or the MAK Museum and the core of the First District. The nearest U-Bahn station is Stubentor.

“A very pleasant surprise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2012

Very good traditional food served by a friendly waiter. On a rainy day we had to sit indoors and the place looks like it has not been changed since 1960. It is like going back in time - in a pleasant way. Everything is vintage, including the coffee machine.
The snack food we had was beautifully presented and very tasty.
