Owner description: Zoo Vienna, the oldest existing zoo in the world founded in 1752. Schonbrunn Zoo was voted Europe's best in 2008, 2010 and 2012. Schonbrunn Zoo is the perfect place for a journey into the fascinating world of the animal kingdom. Open year round, it combines the highlights of the natural world with an unparalleled history as the world's oldest and Europe's best zoo. It is part of Schonbrunn as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage listed site and home to more than 700 species of animals. Marvel at the Giant pandas, tigers, orangutans, koalas and elephants, immerse yourself in the magic of the Amazon and feel the heat of a tropical rainforest in the heart of Europe. Moderated feeding sessions, guided tours and a trip aboard the panorama train turn a trip to the zoo into an unforgettable experience.

It's actually more of a 4/5 stars place, but I visited on a busy day, so that ruined part of the experience for me.
The Zoo is nice enough (though I expected it to be bigger), but don't do the mistake of going there in a week-end or a Holiday. The number of visitors is mind-numbing. In direct connection with this, most of the animals are rightfully stressed out and tend to move as far away from the crouwds as possible, which means you might not see a lot of the nicer ones, which defeats the purpose of actually going to the zoo (who wants to see a bunch of empty-looking cages?).
If you go there, make sure to check out the penguins, monkeys and Kattas - those are the animals that seem to never shy or tire of the hordes of screaming and waving visitors.
Also, pack a bottle of water and maybe some snacks (though you can eat in a lot of places that cater to all tastes around the Tiergarten). Even if don't stay too long in one place, expect at least 2-3 hours for a visit.
I gotta say that the informations available and the directions are more than adequate. One can always get from one attraction to another quite easily, even though the place is quite sinuous.
Overall, not a bad place to visit in a sunny day :)

It's small; the animals are beautifully cared for; there are lots and lots of them; you can really see them; you can park alright; there's a good choice of places to eat - my children and I really like this zoo!

I visited Vienna for a couple of times now and every time i could i went to the Tiergarten.
What you have to know is:
- you will need to take a whole day to see it.
- you should go on a sunny day..because most of the animals stay outside.
- make sure you have a bottle of water because there are few spots where you can buy drinks and you will need water.
- the ticket is about 14 euros but you can buy a special ticket so you can also see the Wustenhaus and Palmenhaus. The price is better if you buy a fool ticket with thous 3.If you buy separately its more expensive.
- you should ask when they are feeding the animals ,it is really fun to watch.
- they have a nice store where you can taste and buy home made food ,like cheese or marmalade
- take a map of the garden just to make sure you see all the animals
- the polar bear and penguins are really fun to watch.
- the Tiergarten is where Schoenbrunn is so if you plan to visit them both make sure you`ll be there at 9 AM because there is a lot to walk and see.
- most important...have fun!

Went to the palace on last day of trip and didn't have much time. I walked through the gardens and around the back of the palace and toward the fountains at the end of the walkway and flowerbeds behind the palace. I noticed off to the side an entrance and went through to find this wonderful zoo. Stopped for dessert and coffee then took off around the zoo -- so many unique animals in one spot and such a crazy place to have it. Makes you really think that those rich folks just were batty enough to say -- hey we have everything else, lets put in a big zoo. Well, they sure did this one right. easy walk, logical layout, plenty of rest and refreshment stops and nice shade when you need it. Highly recommended.

I've seen quite a few zoos and this is certainly one of the best. Most animals seemed happy especially the monkeys who put on a great spontaneous hilarious show. Lots of extra little touches like, good food, bee hives, tree canopy walk, nature walk etc.
Definitely worth a visit.
