“Back to the old standards - even better!”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

I have been back a couple of times before the summer break and enjoyed excellent service in the delightful large Schanigarten. We have been somewhat less impressed by the lamb dishes this year, and some of the sauces seem a bit heavy on the old Austrian favorite - MSG. But choose the right dishes and you will not get a better meal in Vienna. Service recently has been really quite exceptional with a vibrant enthusiastic waitress who simply could not do enough. Stick with the Austrian dishes and you will not go wrong. Quite the best place (again!) in the area leaving aside the very expensive "gourmet" style places which do not always live up to expectations.

“THEE BEST EVER”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

Found this restaurant totally by accident. Everything is the best. Ambiance, in a beautiful courtyard garden out back, totally great local food, best schnitzel my husband ever had, anywhere in Vienna. Staff super friendly. We ate here 3 nights of our 7. Prices are so reasonable you can't believe it. If you stay at Trend Ananas, this restaurant is walking distance. So good. Honestly. You will not be disappointed. Total feel of Austria dining.

“Fantastic authentic Austrian food, great price”
Reviewed May 24, 2013

We lucked into this... every table was booked with a reservation but they accommodated us with one that was available for an hour. The food was GREAT, the portions generous, and very reasonable. I had schnitzel stuffed with mushrooms, onions & bacon, cooked to perfection, for under €10. Beer and wine are also reasonable, good ambiance, and the service is as well. Looking forward to going back (this time, with a reservation).

“Serves one of the best Austrian Food in Vienna”
Reviewed February 22, 2013

I never did like Austrian food until I was brought to this Restaurant by an Austrian friend. In the past, I find austrian food to be too rich, too fat, too greasy and too salty. However, Waldviertlerhof changed my mind forever about the real austrian country food. I am one of their regular customers now. Whenever I am in Vienna, I will go and eat there.

For the first time since coming to Vienna, I finally had some really good austrian food. It is neither too greasy, rich or salty. The portions were generous and large. The salads were fresh and crisp. The meat was excellent and the austrian wines were wonderful. The desserts were sinfully delicious. I was told that majority of the food served in this austrian restaurant comes from the Waldviertler region of Austria, where the food is of good quality and farm-fresh. As for the prices, it was not expensive at all. For Euro 12, you can get a large full meal including drinks.

The restaurant is large, warm and cosy, with typical austrian country decor and pine wooden furnitures. When I enter the restaurant, I forgot that I am in the middle of a city. The place is lively and busy with local patrons, happily drinking beer and wines, and chatting animatedly and loudly. It's like being in the country-side. All the staffs wore typical austrian costume/outfits. The service is good and quick; the waiters are nice and friendly. Some of them can speak English. If you go in Summer, you can sit in their large outdoor summer garden, where you will be eating under huge shady trees.

This restaurant is popular amongst the locals/viennese, so if you plan to have dinner there, better if you call ahead and make reservations. The restaurant is not open on weekends or public holidays.

Favorite Dish: You must try the Toscana Schnitzel. Very different than the typical Wiener schnitzel, and very delicious. If you are not very hungry, try the Chicken Salad. You can have either fried chicken strips or grilled chicken strips with the green salad. It will be dressed with pumpkin-seed oil, and taste so good and healthy. For dessert, you must try the eispalatschinken or pancakes (crepes) with vanilla ice and chocolate fudge. Mmmmm... so yummy!

Directions: Take bus 12A, 13A or 59A, stop at Margaretenplatz/Schoenbrunner Strasse; or Take metro train U4, go to head of train, stop at Kettenbrueckengasse station, take elevator/stairs up, find Wehr gasse, walk to Schoenbrunner strasse, turn right & it's there.

“Recovering?”
Reviewed July 10, 2012

I decided to give this place another chance because it is near my home and it was after all an old favourite. I must say that this time the service was much better - though still not exactly attentive -and the food was certainly acceptable if not quite as good as I had remembered in the past. The Spargel menu was quite imaginative though I think the battered option was perhaps not the best and my Spargel had seen a better day. I certainly think it is worth sticking with them and just hoping that they realise that to stay on top they need to keep trying. The service at Silberwirt just around the corner is certainly much better but then their menu is very limnited and frankly now rather boring. So yes cautious optimism and glad I went back.
