“Cosy fondue place and wine bar”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

We first visited Chamäleon for the restaurant week in February 2013 and were very pleased by a warm reception and tasty meals there. Since then we've became pretty much regulars, as it's a perfect spot for a rich fondue meal or just for a drink, right in the city centre.

“Fantastic!”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

Very nice place with excellent service and great food. The owner is super friendly and helpful. Book in advanced since the restaurant has only a few tables, it is very cosy. Totally recommended for fondue lovers!

“Lovely fondue dinner!”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

We set out to find good fondue in Vienna and used the TripAdvisor city app. It was a bit difficult to find back behind Stephansdom but the map on the app was very helpful. It was so our search! The Swiss owner is absolutely delightful and a generous host. We ordered the traditional fondue with a bottle of wine and the flavors were amazing. There's an intimate vibe in this little restaurant, making for a very romantic dinner. For a fondue meal, it was an excellent value. Many thanks to the owner for the shot of Schnapps to finish off the meal! Highly recommended!

“Tasteless Food served with poor service!”
Reviewed February 24, 2013 via mobile

I discovered this small restaurant as we passed by it on our way to the Mozart House. The menu options seemed quite comprehensive in the menu outside and it looked like it might be one of those restaurants that's not too touristy.

The restaurant is only small and has about 5 tables.

The problems started as soon as we ordered.

First, I attempted to order a Fondue from the 6 that where available, but was told I could not have it unless someone shared it with me, as they would only make it for two. So I ordered the "Austrian Style Burger", as did my uncle.

A few minutes after ordering a couple came and sat on the table behind us and ordered.
5 minutes later, our food arrived, but was sent to the couple.
We protested to the waitress asking her why our food hadn't arrived yet as the couple tucked in.
The food that had come out of the kitchen was indeed ours, and was taken from the couple who where eating it, and put in front of us.
I explained to the waitress that one of the meatballs had already been cut into and some of the chips already been eaten, so she took it back to the kitchen. 2 minutes later she returned with our plates, one of which was missing a meatball. I had to ask the owner before the 2nd meatball was brought out to me as I had already finished the meal!
Recieved no apology whatsoever !

Our "Austrian Style Burger" dish was disappointing also. It had 2 large "meatballs" which can only be described as oversized hamburger patties. These had a blob of mustard on the top and where served with only French fries, no sign of a burger bun or anything else one expects with a burger-a very sorry dining experience indeed!

Very disappointed!

All I can say is its one of those horrid experiences that I'll laugh about in 5 years time!

“Great Swiss food, great service”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

Great location on a quiet cobblestone street hidden behind Stephansdom, the dining room is quite small and cozy--a very warm feeling right from the start. It's just slightly tricky to find, so check your map or call for directions.

The food is excellent and the service quite good and attentive (which is really saying something here in Vienna). We had a fixed price menu that started off with a glass of sekt and an excellent salad, followed by fondue with mushrooms and a sorbet with Calvados for dessert. The owner brought us more fondue at the end of the meal, which we accepted, and left entirely satisfied. He was also there anytime we needed anything and was quite friendly and entertaining. We were a group of five from four different countries, and the American and the Brits wanted to tip for the excellent service, and the owner didn't want to accept it--what? Good service for free? Unheard of! (I'm not sure if he accepted the tip or not in the end as I wasn't the one negotiating the bill.)

Additionally, there's very interesting art on display on the walls and it's all for sale (and not for terribly outrageous prices, either). Definitely recommended for a group of friends, a romantic dinner for a couple, or a business dinner (maybe not the best place for kids, as fondue can be a little dangerous).

Finally, menu prices are quite reasonable, especially for the first district of Vienna.
