Right around the corner from the Mozart House is this charming little slice of Switzerland, featuring excellent fondue, raclette, and other specialities. The Chamaeleon is all the more welcoming because of its friendly owner, Hans, whose English was perfected as a high school exchange student in tiny Comstock, Nebraska! Linger over a schnapps or a kaffee fertig and soak in the ambiance of the narrow cobblestone street. Tschuess!

This is a representative of the rare species of Swiss restaurants. I think I have never been to one before, so this was a premiere. What do you think about when you think about Swiss food? Cheese, right? And that's what you can have there, in the form of cheese fondue and raclette. There is a small variety of differently flavoured fondues, we had the original one with cheese only, but if you are a more refined taster, you can even have one with champagne.
The place is very small, the interior is a little dated, but all this is not a disadvantage but makes up the nice atmosphere. What really counts, however, is the friendliness of the Swiss owner, who makes everyone feel very welcome!

We were looking to have some fondue and found this place under “Swiss Restaurants” (although not on Trip Advisor). A small restaurant on a side street not far from Stephansdom. Courteous owner. Good fondue, although with brown bread which, I think, interferes more with the tastes of the cheese than would white bread.

Still, although not inexpensive, a fine value. Pleasantly, a glass of schnapps as a gratuity was provided at the end of the meal (a lot better than a fortune cookie). An intimate place and charming, but because it's so small you might want to make a reservation before heading over.
