A wonderful ambience and an experience of grandeur on the top floor of the Grand Hotel. Service was very professional and discreet and the whole experience a delight. The restaurant is bathed in soft yellow colours and the furnishings elegantly match. The food was extremely good and the evening ended all too quickly! I would not hesitate in recommending this as a meal for a special treat. I didn't pick up the bill, so cannot comment on the value - but this was the best eating experience I had during three days in Vienna.

A visit to Le Ciel is not really about the food (although the food is generally excellent), but about the experience of being pampered. On our second visit – this time with wheelchair and dog – we received 5* treatment once again. The tables on the terrace are not quite as spaciously placed as inside, but still very comfortable, and even the noise of the Ring fades into the background in this heavenly atmosphere.

The lunch menu allows guests to choose from 17 different dishes each priced at a very reasonable EUR 13- and, surprisingly for fine dining in Vienna, there was no cover charge at lunch (it’s EUR 5 at dinner).

The food here is classic and perfectly prepared with a few garnishes (dabs of sauce, edible flowers), but no showy gimmicks. A pre-starter of a fennel soup with hemp oil to be sipped from a coffee cup, was absolutely delicious and, combined with the crusty wild garlic bread, made for an excellent start. From the starters we tried, the scallops with pea puree were outstanding, the Carpaccio very good, while the duck liver terrine was somewhat underwhelming. The main of Iberico pork was tender and flavourful with a very good carrot puree – the kind of dish which looks small, but is immensely satisfying and filling. The ridiculously good post-dessert of crunchy puff pastry filled with an unctuous tonka bean cream made up for the average desserts. Blancmange with amarena ice-cream was cloyingly sweet even without the pile of spun sugar on top. The Herb-flower garden sounded intriguing, and several components – a basil mousse and refreshing minty crushed ice – tasted great, but I’m not sure it worked as an overall concept, and those with a sweet tooth would certainly be disappointed. I tried a few of the petit fours and they were perfect – the flower-shaped passion fruit creation is enough in itself to make us crave to come back.

They offer excellent glasses of wine to match the food, but be prepared to pay between EUR 5 and EUR 9 per glass – if you like wine, it’s worth it.

The real highlight here is the service – so good it’s hard to describe exactly why. Every person who works here seems to take great pride and pleasure in making sure that everything is just perfect, without ever seeming eager, “friendly” or snooty/distanced. As we were celebrating a birthday, they brought a Gugelhupf with sparkling candle (happy birthday playing over the speakers) and then served a few slices with fresh berries and put the rest in a special tin to take home (all at no extra charge!).

If I was weighing up where to go in Vienna for a special occasion (rather than an experimental multi-course menu), there is no question that this would be my first choice.

You brought one of your best dresses and want a good reason to wear it? This is where you need to go: Even the waiters are dressed up to the nines. The interior is soppy but after a few days in Vienna you are used to that anyway. Prices may appear through the roof but every dish we tried was absolutely worth every penny. Every dish is made with a lot of attention to detail and only with the very best ingredients. You don't need to be a big fan of French cuisine to enjoy a lovely evening here. The best bit is the humongous selection of local and international wines; Expect to pay a hefty premium though.

Very nicely decorated space. Welcoming with friendly helpful
service. Prices seemed reasonable as compared to others and food and service better. Economy quite strong here, I was informed by an executive of Nestle and difficult to get qualified people for all positions that are open.
Speaks well for the professionalism of the staff here.
All expectations for a fine meal should be satisfied here.
Return? Yes.
