Description: You can find the Salzamt in the heart of the ,Bermuda Triangle'. It has been said that the Salzamt was the starting point of the Viennese Nightlife area (Bermuda Dreieck). The architect Herman Czech created this elegant and functional but playful space in 1983. White table cloths stretch throughout the dining area surrounded by wooden benches and Art - Deco chandeliers. The bar tempts with dimed lights and leather sofas to lounge in, creating a feeling of timelessness. On the daily handwritten menu one can find bistrot classics such as Vitello Tonnato or Beef Tatare but Viennese specialities like veal ,Wiener Schnitzel', Tafelspitz, diverse Gulash's as well international and eastern European dishes. There is a wide variety of Austrian and international wines with focus on the Bründlmayer in Kamptal. The beer selection features Viennese pils, Czech beer and white beer. Further fruit juices, fine spirits and local schnaps are on the drinks menu. In summer you can enjoy the outside seating on the calm and charming Ruprechtsplatz next to the oldest church in Vienna overlooking the Danube canal. Until 1824 the Salzamt was located here. The salt office was the salt taxing authority of the Habsburg monarchy. Today Salzamt is known as a meeting point for the arts and media scene and other luminaries, who enjoy this unpretentious place. If you want to dine and drink in a cozy atmosphere the Salzamt will take care of you.

“Nice restaurant with reasonable prices”
Reviewed April 17, 2014

When I stay in Vienna I often visit the Restaurant Salzamt. It is located at the border of the first district, next to the Danube river. The Ruprechtsplatz is beautiful - I always enjoy walking to the restaurant.

The menu is hand-written and changes from time to time. So you can be sure, that the dishes are seasonal. The menu is a mixture of typical Austrian and Croatian/Serbian dishes. Besides Wiener Schnitzel you eill always find two other dishes on the menu: American tartare and roastbeef. I swear, the best you can get in Vienna! Try both, you will like it.

The wines are of good quality, you have the choice between Austrian (Styria, Lower Austria, Burgenland) and Balkan (e.g. Plavac) wines.

The restaurant is divided in two rooms. The small area with the bar is for smokers, the dining room is non smoking. The ambiance is rustique, the interior consists of wooden floor, wooden tables and chairs.

The service is unobtrusive and discreet but quick and polite.

The price performance ratio is good. A nice evening with a botttle of wine costs you around 70 to 80 Euros for two persons!

During the week you don't have to reserve a table - on weekends the restaurant is quite full!

I can recommend Restaurant Salzamt!

“Enjoyable dinner in a characteristically Viennese restaurant”
Reviewed April 10, 2014

I really enjoyed an early dinner there as a party of two but I think this place is more suitable for groups, or so it seems as there were quite a few large and small groups. The food was pretty good and the service quite pleasant. There is a separate room for smokers, which is good. Value for money is not bad but there are slightly better places both for atmosphere and food int he same price range. I chose "very good" because I like the food but atmosphere is simply not my cup of tea and it was too noisy for me. Food saves them.

Criticism: they could be a bit more friendly.

“Excellent Food, Quaint Atmosphere”

I visited this restaurant while on business and their head server took the time to explain the menu in English. The duck, kraut, and dumplings were delicious.

“Good food friendly service”
Reviewed March 22, 2014 via mobile

The restaurant is not easy to find but i cannot say that its worth to keep trying to find it. The environment was like noone cared to decorate but the food was ok and the service friendly. The menu was not available in english but there was an appointed waiter that seemed the only one speaking english and was glad to serve us in translating. I wouldnt bother to go back

Thank Dannytz
