My wife and I visited here for a very early dinner prior to our departure to airport so the place was quiet. The menu is obviously traditional fare and there is a good variety of Austrian specialties to appreciate. We wanted to try "Tafelspitz", the boiled beef dish featured in Rick Stein's tv programme about Vienna.
We were not disappointed.
Waiter was very polite and friendly (quite unusual for Vienna!) We were seated outside at a table for two. Despite it's central location the place is tucked away in a quiet street behind the main streets.
There was a reasonable €3 cover charge made (as is usual in Vienna) for a nice variety of bread with flavoured butters which were unusual and very tasty.
You have the option when you order tafelspitz to have the beef broth as your starter. We declined although regretted it as the beef came in a terrine with the broth which was delicious.
Two large slices of boiled beef each along with beef marrow, carrots and other veg were served from individual terrines by the waiter at our table. Beef was delicious, melt in the mouth and was accompanied with separate chive mayo and an apple/horseradish mixture that my wife loved. We also ordered a side of tasty creamed spinach which was more than enough for two although very salty.
We ordered a reasonably priced bottle of excellent gruner veltliner white wine for about €24. I am not a big white wine fan but this variety is lovely and fresh, not too dry or sweet and perfect for a warm evening.
All in our meal was about €85 and worth every penny. We will go back here the next time we are in Vienna.
Highly recommended!
