Description: The Japanese Restaurant Unkai is a special example of exquisite service and fascinating delicacies of the Japanese kitchen. Dishes like Sushi and Sashimi are prepared on the highest level, the Teppanyaki grill being the most popular way of preparation. Two original Japanese Tatami rooms as well as two European dining rooms are available for private dining. Special highlight is the exclusive Sushi-Brunch, offered on weekends and public holidays. On Thursdays, one can enjoy the after work sushi buffet. Various Bento-boxes and Sushi-Sets are also available for take-away.

We went for the tepanyaki. The chef was a chinese cook who didnt do the whole show usually tepanyaki chefs do. He just cooked silently our food in front of us. We asked for medium rare steaks and they where overcooked and dry.
The rest was delicious. The wine was great and the service was attentive...so attentive that at 23h they started to turn off lights in order to send us the message that they wanted to go home. I will not go back but the hotel has a great terrace and i would go back to try the dinner up there on the 7th floor.

Decided to try the Teppanyaki at the Unkai Restaurant at the Grand hotel in Vienna. Overall, a somewhat decent meal even so the food presentation was probably more meant for tourists and the usual flames on the Teppanyaki table seem to be a normal occurrence whenever you dine at a teppanyaki table. The Chef, however, was pleasant and had previously worked in Manila as did many of the service personnel. The seafood we had ordered was fresh and overall, the food was good. Service was not very attentive and the fact that we were the only diners at the section had probably something to do with this. It was an expensive meal but I suppose that can be expected when you order fresh seafood and wine at a Japanese Restaurant in a Grand Hotel in Vienna. Would I go back probably not.

The restaurant has a small branch on the ground floor of this restaurant. One of the Chinese waiter there speaks ver poor English. I ordered a "special sushi set" but a "spicy tuna maki" was presented. Will never come back!

Dear Stella L
Thank you for your feedback. For your information, the sushi bar has its own tripadvisor page unter the name of Unkai sushi bar.
I am very disappointed with the content of your review. However, after investigating the particulars with the team members I was even more disapointed to learn that the content of the review was not an accurate reflection of what actually happend.
The Chinese waiter speaks very good English. The order given to him was "spicy tuna maki". The order was prepared by the chef and served to you. After consuming the complete order you complaint to the waiter. He handled the complained properly and did not offer any compensation as there was no mistake done.
Kind regards
S. Pucher / Director Food & Beverage

This is the review for the restaurant on the 7th floor of Grand Hotel Wien. I was introduced to this restaurant by a Japanese diplomat. We were never disappointed at Unkai in terms of food quality. We go there almost every month till the portions started shrinking and price increasing. Now we go there occasionally. Food is excellent and service is always great. Portions of the food could be a bit bigger considering the price which goes up on a yearly basis. Perhaps they hired the former chef from Tenmaya which has closed down. We noticed that the set lunch tray is arranged like Tenmaya which is quite small as it was cheaper. Food is as authentic as it gets and we usually take our overseas Japanese visitors and friends there.

Dear guest,
Thank you very much for taking the time to review our restaurant online following your last visit. Your feedback is treated with the utmost seriousness, but needs some clarification. We have not shrunk the portions over the last years and have adjusted the prices only when the raw materials went up. As the Tenmaya restaurant has been closed for years and their chef is certainly not working with us the comparison flaws.
We do appreciate your support by bringing your Japanese visitors and friends to the Unkai and look forward to seeing you again in the near future.
Best regards,
S. Pucher / Director Food & Beverage
