The service very poor, if you are counting under one hour the evening go somwhere else. Food and wine: averege or a little bit better.

While tourists will trek to Grinzing to sample the traditional fare at one of the many heuriger (Austrian wine tavern), only an occasional expat living in the 19th District or visiting friend might wander into Francesco. The Austrians who live in the area, however, seem to know well the merits of Francesco's kitchen. It's a pity, so I thought I would add an English review to the German ones here.

First of all, Francesco, along with the Athene Greek restaurant down the street, offers a bit of ethnic variety in an area that otherwise almost exclusively contains just traditional Austrian restaurants. The present owners, who, along with a number of staff, must be Italians, appear to have purchased one of the traditional heuriger, so the ambience is a bit jarring. The interior is distinguished by rough-hewn timbers and brick, only relieved by one stark white, plaster statue of a maiden in a traditional Roman style in one of the restaurant's many sections. The hearty Teutonic ambience contrasts with a fairly sophisticated menu that, while including a full range of pizzas, also has an extensive selection of wines by the glass and Italian pastas and traditional main courses like saltimbocca ala Romana. The no-smoking dining area, perhaps converted from a former storeroom, however, was more modern, with a canvas awning hanging from the roof and walls painted a salmon color.

I ordered one of the daily specials, a risotto con filetto di manzo. I had expected an actual steak, but the "manzo" (beef) were actually cubes of beef in the risotto. Regardless, the risotto was a good meal. My friend had a seafood spaghetti (ai frutti di mare) that was a very generous portion. I sampled another friend's squid with braised rucola, and was impressed with the smoky flavor of the calamari and its tenderness. My wife had a salmon filet that she enjoyed. While the restaurant doesn't stand out from the very high quality of the numerous Italian restaurants in Vienna, Francesco compares quite favorably to others that attract tourists in the First District.

While our waiter was not particularly friendly, he was efficient. The food arrived after the usual wait. I am genuinely puzzled by the previous reviewer's very critical review, and wonder if she perhaps went to the other Francesco Pizzeria, which is located in the 14th District.

If you are hungry, in a hurry or in a budget. .... DON'T COME HERE...
The service was terrible, we had to wait for 40min just to place the order; and another 30min for food to arrived, and the portion as kid's portions...... We were blody starving and we almost cry when we saw our plates...... To add insult to injury it was kind of expensive.....
