If you are looking for a place to completely unwind while traveling this part of Europe's major cities, Hotel Kapeller is just the ticket. When you arrive in Innsbruck, just purchase an inexpensive public transportation ticket for the number of days you are staying, get the Amras #3 tram to the end of the line, check in and enjoy the quiet and comfort.
Across one side of the street is a sweet and neat classic Austrian farmhouse with attached dairy that even has a 24-hour milk dispensing machine. Across another street is a perfectly charming Baroque church. And the view! The surrounding Tirolean Alps are staggeringly beautiful. The entire neighborhood is perfect for strolling about and it is a great starting point for the walk to Ambras Castle, something not to be missed. If you are hiking in the area and go beyond the castle, you will come across a poignant and quietly disturbing cemetery for Tirolean soldiers of World War I and II. There are several restaurants in the immediate vicinity and I highly recommend Bierwirt Tiroler Wirtshaus.
But I digress. The hotel is spotlessly clean and minimally decorated, cutting down on the distraction of the decor. Our room was spacious, well-outfitted and had an excellent bathroom. One thing that immediately came to mind was the clean, fresh air. It was the middle of winter and a time when hotel rooms can be stuffy. The bed was extremely comfortable and this coupled with the quiet made for a superb night's sleep.
The staff was warm and accommodating in every way.
For those who were less than satisfied with the breakfast, I beg to differ. I am an organic food gardener and quite discerning when it comes to ingredients. Those used in some of the dishes was so far superior to those that we encountered in other parts of the area. Eggs were like they came from our own pampered chickens, with rich thick yolks that were deep orange. Milk, yogurt and cheese was excellent.
If you must shop, a little walk takes you to a massive shopping center with every possible store that you would require. It is out of the way enough so as not to disturb the idyllic surroundings.
Of all of the places we stayed during our 3-week vacation in Germany, Austria and Slovakia, Hotel Kapeller stands out as one of the finest.
