Owner description: Austria's highest mountain and centrepiece of the High Tauern National Park You can approach the Grossglockner in many different ways: it is the highest mountain of the Alpine Republic, one of the most striking elevations in the Eastern Alps and the summit of passion for many a mountaineer. The mountain is also home to people, numerous animals and rare plants. The Glockner is cloaked in secrecy, is the stuff of legend and has great attractive power. It is an obstacle on the path from north to south, yet a place where it has been overcome through the millennia. Join us and get to know his majesty, the Grossglockner, in his numerous aspects!

The view of the glaciers is fantastic. You can visit the place by car, motorcycle or even bicycle and the path to there is also very beautiful. There is a souvenir shop and a large parking area. A must-see in Austria!

good view - nice road, but expensive!
The view at the glacier was poor - other glaciers in switzerland are more worth to look at.

I visited grossglockner via a day tour from Salzburg on a sunny day. The journey up grossglockner is amazing. I was surrounded by the snowy mountains and truly felt that I was in the heart of the alps. I have been to the swiss alps via train and cable car but this drive beats those train rides which had blocked views. I enjoyed the drive up more than the scenery at the viewing platform. The restaurant food at the view point exceeded my exepectationa too.

We had planned to visit the Grossglockner as part of a weeks stay in Austria. Having read all the reviews and explored the website we had expectations, which I'm pleased to say turned out to be fulfilled in full. The road is a toll road, but as long as you don't go through the toll gates you can go back a forth as many times as you like. The views are fantastic and the road takes you through the the mountains at your own speed, room to overtake if you want, no pressure to go to fast and plenty of places to stop and make with the cameras.
Half way along the road is an exhibition on how the road was built, near to this is a wonderful little cafe where you can have a coffee and take in the views.
At the Franz Josef Glacier there is plenty of parking and places to eat and drink, you can take a ride in a small vertical railway down to the glacier, worth the journey, just to see the amount the glacier has shrunk over time as there are markers showing where it was in the past.
We had a very enjoyable day on the Grossglockner and I would recommend it, just pick a day with good visibility.
