Description: History, gastronomy, culture and civilised social life come together in the elegant surroundings of the St Peter Stiftskeller, the best address in Salzburg, Mozart's sublime home city. Inside the walls of a Benedictine abbey at the heart of Salzburg's colourful Old Town, the Stiftskeller has been a popular meeting place for princes and bishops, citizens and merchants for more than a millennium. A documented visit by Charlemagne in 803 is its claim to be Europe's oldest hostelry. More than a restaurant, the Stiftskeller remains Salzburg's rendez-vous of choice - a place for good eating and drinking, of course, but also for entertaining, exchanging ideas and being seen. Townsfolk and tourists mingle with travelling celebrities, gourmets and business folk. Splendid private rooms host fashionable receptions. Its location between the Cathedral and the Festival Theatre puts the Stiftskeller at the centre of everything, in this intimate and cultured small city. The arcaded inner court is the heart of the Stiftskeller with a refreshing atmosphere of an interior garden. A welcome refuge from the heat of summer in the city, it's a place to relax after shopping or sightseeing, for a light supper before the opera or a late bite afterwards. International stars come and go during Salzburg's summer festival, and no one makes a fuss. For a private party or a group celebration, the Stiftskeller has ten beautiful private rooms varying in style and size to suit any event from a catwalk fashion show to a more intimate family gathering. The Baroque Hall comes with full regalia of gilded stucco. Other rooms offer more restrained elegance, cosy wooden panelling, rough and rustic stonework or a more edgy modern decorative scheme.

“Mozart, Michael Haydn, and memorable Salzburg dining”
Reviewed March 23, 2014

Over 1200 years old, St. Peter's Stiftskeller has served as a meeting and dining place for both nobility and the wealthier of the middle class. In the mid-1700's, noted composer Johann Michael Haydn (younger brother of Franz Josef Haydn) lodged in the top floor; today, the Stiftskeller features fine dining and "The Mozart Experience": period costumes and live instrumental/vocal performances of music by Salzburg's favorite son. Although on the expensive side, the dining/concert combination served as a wonderful finale to a day exploring Salzburg.

“A very good Mozart evening”
Reviewed March 22, 2014 via mobile

This is a memorable evening. The music and singing, which were excerpts from Don Giovanni, Figaro and Magic Flute, were really excellent. The atmosphere is also excellent and the food is good. This really is a must for an evening out in Salzburg and is actually very good value for money given the quality of the music. A bit disappointing that some people make no effort to dress for the occasion. Why have a dress code if it doesn't mean anything? Anyway put on your best togs the venue and evening deserve it.

“Tasteless overpriced chicken”
Reviewed March 13, 2014 via mobile

Indeed the restaurant is impressive, the atmosphere relaxing and the building gorgeous but one would expect that being the oldest restaurant in Europe they would learn how to cook a chicken! Went there with a big group of friends and while most were happy with their meal (though not with the price), the black feathered chicken I had ordered was tasteless. So were the potatoes, as well as the 3 (!)little pieces of zucchini that came with it. It cost 24€ and was still hungry when leaving. Though I acknowledge that others were not disappointed with the food, I find what they served me unacceptable. The waiter could also benefit from some lessons in non - condescending behaviour. Also, he should know better than to ask if the customer wants to add a tip on their visa! Wine was terribly overpriced too! Would not suggest this place, unless there is a very special occasion, in which case it's best to order the vegetarian courses.

“Fantastic dining experience”
Reviewed March 13, 2014 via mobile

This restaurant is a must when visiting Salzburg. The place is simply amazing, and the food is divine. The menu and wine selection is extensive, you will have difficulty in deciding what you're going to have. And for the Mozart fan, there's the Mozart dinner experience as well, where you dine on food authentic for that period and being served and entertained by waiters and musicians wearing the costume of that time.

Great experience for the New Year's day! Superb dishes, amazing festive and cosy environment and really great service, worth tipping. A must-visit place all year round... Especially during Christmas and summer, when the outdoor area is available for dining.
